But check with the bank or card company that you can use the card abroad, and what it cost for use.
MasterCard and Visa are the most accepted cards in Europe, American Express is not liked much because it costs more for shops to use it.
Also check with the bank what it costs to get money out of an ATM, as that is the most convenient way to change your money and have some (needed) cash.
If your normal bank card is cheaper to use, use that in ATMs.

Yeah, I did that when I went to Paris and Spain. I bought a visa debit card from triple A, you just add the money to it in dollars and you can use it at stores or restaurants in Europe. It will take it off in euros, just remember to keep track of your spending, you can also add more to it while you're in Europe. American express also offers a travelers cheque card which is similar, I liked the visa card better though because the American express wasn't accepted everywhere.

Not sure about every bank, but I used my bank card in Mexico without a problem. The bank just automatically adjusts the money to US.
