China's economy will definitely grow over the years and will grow faster than Japan's one from the economic view, and learning Chinese may benefit you. However, Japan's technology is way better than China's and the recent fake things produced by China might hinder your decision.

Anyway, I suggest taking up Chinese as it is much easier to learn and the characters have only one syllable to it. Japanese characters originated from the Chinese ones and they might be a little harder to write, say it out and memorise, besides that, Chinese is easier to be said than Japanese.

Unless you are a fan of manga or anime, or even if you stay in Japan, then I suggest you take up Japanese, if not Chinese.

That's a really good question. Jobwise I think japanese is still more useful, but in ten years or so I think mandarin will surpass it. China will also play a dramatically increasing role in world politics in the upcoming decades. So personally I would choose mandarin. One sixth of the earth can't be wrong.

I learned Chinese, so I'm biased.

But China's economy will grow faster than Japan's in the next 10 or 20 years, and they will be more and more visible on the world political stage.

Be warned however. Speaking and listening you might master in a few years of intense study, and it could stick with you. But learning to read and write characters will require daily practice for the REST of YOUR LIFE if you want to keep it from fading.

From a political and economical point of view, you should learn both of the languages.
Actually, it depends on your choice and which one you like it more.

Honestly, those countries speak better English then Americans, so I wouldn't bother. To be helpful, it depends on your prerogative... What exactly do you want to apply the language to? Translation, Travel, teaching in that country? They Japanese economy hinges on technology, so it just depends!
