Amish people in various states only use horses and buggies for transportation as their religious beliefs forbid them from using any modern conviences or prideful things like electricty, telephones, cars, trucks, etc....watch the movie "Witness" with Harrison Ford for a good idea of their simple lifestyle. Many rural areas of foreign countries rely solely on horses for daily use, travel and farming and some like Mongolia have a tradition of horsemanship as part of their culture.

People rent bicycles and horses to get around. It is a very cool place to visit.
