I am a British guy, currently living in the UK. It is my dream to spend a year working in Oregon. What is the best way for me to get a us visa? Is it true I must have a job and a place to live before I can get a visa? If so, where is the best place to find such a job?

Send emails to companies asking them if you can do a year's work experience and that you are from the United Kingdom. If you can get this then apply for a VISA, you will need to have some sort of accomodation before you get one (you can get a 3 month travel VISA a lot easier), and then you must go to London (no matter where you live in the UK), and be interviewed by the US Embassy.

The standard work visa is a H1 visa, this is valid for three years, and you need a higher form of education or highly needed skills, for a job that an American is unable to do.

The work visa is sponsored by the US employer, and this is a capped visa, so only so many are handed out each year. You must find a US employer who is willing to sponsor you, and they must prove they can not find an American to do that job.

You don't need a job to get a visa. If you want to stay in the US that's another story. If you don't have skills that are in high demand, then unless you marry a US citizen, your best chances of getting hired are in an English pub in Portland, Eugene, or Corvalis.

Your best bet would be to change your name to something Spanish, go to Mexico and spend a few weeks soaking up the sun getting a really dark tan. Then slip across the border and stay as long as you want.

Don't laugh, 12 million people have done it.
