I have a degerative disc in my lower back with some arthiritis from a fall down some stairs years ago. I know I have to be careful, but so want to do something to flatten my stomach. I have a hard time with walking alot because this injury affects my sciatic nerve thus pain in my legs, but I have been able to drop about 20lbs in the past couple months. Does anyone have any real suggestions and not some sarcastic remark like I usually get? Please be serious about your answers. Thank you.

I am not trying to lose weight in my stomach area, I am trying to work to tone it up and tighten muscles.

See a chiropractor about your Sciatica. A simple adjustment gives you relief altho it would depend on the injury. A massage from a registered massage therapist after the adjustment will also help you keep the muscles around your sciatic nerve loose so they won't keep causing you pain.

I don't know that you can do crunches with your back issues. I can't because of degenerative discs in my neck so this is what I do. Lay flat on the floor. Pull your knees up to your chest (keeping your back flat to the floor), sucking your lower abdomen in at the same time, then twist to the left. Then bring your legs back to your abdomen pulling in your abs again then twist to the right. You won't be able to do these I don't think until after you get your back sorted out but you can give it a try. You can make it harder by putting a weight ball (6 lbs) between your knees when you do them.

Another one that supports your back is to lay flat on a bench, pull your knees up to your stomach (again sucking in your abs as you do it), then straighten your legs out. Repeat without touching the floor as many times as you can. You can place your arms anywhere on the bench that helps support your back to be flat. Again, I'm not sure whether you can manage it until you get your back sorted out.

I also have an Ab-lounger which I think, if you can't do the other exercises would be a benefit to you. It's a chair that supports your body as you do "crunches". I find it very benefical as I can do the crunches without straining my neck. I got mine from the Shopping Channel.

I would contact Jesse Cannone on "Lose The Back Pain"
I did and I would recommend anyone with problems of this nature does the same. The exercises are sensible and work. http://www.losethebackpain.com/freegifts.html

You can't spot reduce fat in an area, you have to lose overall body fats. This link contains a lot of helpful guidelines: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=3768961
