I would go with the '08 model. Usually first year cars have minor problems (sensors fail, fuses blow, etc., nothing big) and in the second year run a lot of these things get fixed so you don't have to worry about them. Now yes this may not always be true because car manufacturer's do have major recalls in the middle year runs of cars, but your chances are better at buying a car that is in its second year run.

Example: Dodge came out in 2003 with the Dodge Neon SRT-4. In '03 this car was awesome, but little fixes were needed. For the 2004 model Dodge added a much needed limited slip differential (LSD) and I think the '04's PCV was exchanged for a better unit. This is what I mean by little fixes to make the following year's model car better. The LSD was a big one for the SRT-4, but little things like the PCV are less evident to most buyers.

On another note with the '08 Caliber you have the option of going with the '08 Caliber SRT-4. Hard to argue with the sweet aggressive styling and a 2.4L turbocharged 4-cyl that puts out 265HP and still will get good gas mileage. I'm excited about it.
