Have police & law enforment turned society into a bunch of wussies?

imagine how life would be without the police - people would learn to stick up for themselves & courageously fight the ills of the world themselves, learn the importance of teaming-up with the like-minded & support each other at times of danger.

Today, because the police exists to take care of the ills and dangers, don't you think these values and skills that people had to learn and adapt themselves to bravely combat the evils, have become extinct? Because anytime if a person is confronted by evil, he invariably uses cop-outs. The average person today cannot bravely defend himself if the police did not exist to help him.

What are your thoughts on this?

Working in the law enforcement community, I sometimes wish people would attempt to be neighborly and take some matters into their own hands. All to often police are responding to barking dog complaints, loud music, suspicious vehicles etc... There are times when the police need to be called in these situations, however nobody wants to be neighborly anymore. If I have an issue with a neighbor, I attempt to knock on their door and get the problem resolved. If their dog is barking or the music is to loud, ask them kindly to put the dog inside or turn down the music. If I see a car full of people that look out of place, I approach and ask if I could help them with something.
You're right is saying now that most people just call the police and don't worry. This spreads the police to thin and changes response times to emergency calls.
Again, there are times when it's appropriate to call the police for "simple" calls. If you are in a bad neighborhood, it's a known drug house, problems with neighbors, known abusers etc...I just wish people would go back to being people and interacting with one another and maybe some of this petty stuff would stop.

The general topic is specialization. The average citizen may not be able to defend himself physically, but is also not able to defend himself legally either. And is also not able to provide food or water for himself (acquiring meats, vegetables, etc). Or build a house for himself, create clothes, medicines, stop fires effectively, etc. We all rely on the actions of others.

If people were to be "truly independent" - they would have to spend a great deal of time learning a lot about all these different areas. They may have a gift in one particular area; but by virtue of their independence, they could not focus exclusively on their gift, because they need to satisfy their other needs as well, and that takes a lot of time.

By virtue of specialization, people can choose to enter professions which utilize their talents most effectively; and this creates a great deal more wealth for society. Wealth is created by allocating resources in a more optimal way.

The tradeoff is that we become totally reliant on the actions of others. Adam Smith did not see that as a problem, because if anything can be relied upon in society--it is that people act in their own self interest. Thus, the butcher cuts your meat not because he loves you, or because of some lofty ideal; but because you pay him; and he can use that pay to satisfy his own needs.

No, I think the blame shifting liberals have ruined this country and have made the police and law enforcement MORE NECESSARY.

I think that bad parenting and the inability of neighborhoods to make kids behave has created a society afraid of our own kids, which is leading us on a path to our self destruction.

And you're wrong about people "bravely defending themselves." I have people defending themselves everyday with sticks, bats, knives, guns and fists. We don't charge them with any crime if a witness supports them. If no witnesses, we look at their criminal history and try to piece together what we think happened.

But trust me when I say that little punks have made the police more important now than ever.

I disagree with your premise. Most average people dont have the desire or the mental toughness to police themselves. It is difficult and ugly and soul-sucking and most people don't really want to do it. They want a stranger to be the bad guy, the kill joy, the nanny. Take the police away and criminals will just run wild all over everyone.

the neighborhoods i came from the police are after the fact!!!

they actually tell you to get a gun and shoot the person who is threatening you with bodily harm then drag them into your front door of your home, then give them a call!!!

you could possibly get a year for manslaughter, but with good time your out in a heartbeat!!!

this was not for me, got educated, joined the service, explored some of the world, bought a semi, saw our beautiful country, bought a home in the middle of some of the best ranching and farming land in the world!!!

I think you are as wrong as you can be. You would replace civilization with the law of the jungle.
There would be no protection for people who cannot defend themselves.

I think it is more of a problem due from politicians and over zealous trial lawyers. If someone breaks in your house and you take them down and break their leg or something, they can turn around and sue you.
