My mom is 42 and she just found out today that she has herpes. I know I can't catch it, but is it really okay to let her use my bath room? What about drinking after her or eating after her? I know it sounds bad but its kinda grossing me out. Any advice would be great.

Yes, it is fine to share a bathroom with her, the herpes virus is actually incredibly fragile and can't survive for more than a few seconds outside the body. Herpes is transmitted infected skin to skin, not through inanimate objects.

As for drinking etc, I take it your mother has genital herpes. Genital herpes is only infectious through contact with her genitals. It is a localised virus and cannot be spread through her mouth.

Oral herpes can be spread through the mouth - but eight out of ten people have cold sores(oral herpes) so you come into contact with plenty of those all the time. And if your mouth came into contact with the mouth of someone with oral herpes, i'e if you kissed them, you aren't going to develop genital herpes, you might just get cold sores on your mouth. Stop worrying so much!

You will be OK,.Read about it on line. There is some good info!
1st where are the herpes? If she has the(HSV1) herpes simplex 1 that are on the mouth, then the( HSV2) that are on the genitals. Mouth sore can spread by Kissing someone, and using the same eating utensils.
HSV2 is spread through intimate contact with another.A Mother can pass it on to an unborn child.

Herpes is a direct sexual- "contact to contact" virus; You're NOT going to catch it from using the bathroom after your Mother. So don't worry about that. She may have had it for quite some time... -and not known. So keep THAT in mind- as your own relationships come & go; a guys personal "history" does matter...

Herpes simplex virus - or just plain herpes is a virus that is transmitted via skin to skin contact. This is only the parts of the skin with the virus on it (her vaginal area) The virus cannot live on toilet seats or door knobs. The virus must have a "host" in order to be active. You won't get the virus just by touching things she's touched.

OMG....I feel so sorry for her. Okay, Herpes can only be transferred by either bodily fluids or open wound contact at certain times is what I heard. I don't think you need to worry about sharing a restroom. I wish we could tell the man who gave it to her (I'm sure he knows he has it) a thing or two. What a thing to get at her age....I'm sorry again and please be sympathetic to her now .....as this is a very sensitive issue I'm sure to her. She needs support from you...please sit and take time to talk with her about this. You may be the only person she can really express her feelings to about the issue? You are probably the only one she can trust?

first off you can transmit herpes to anyone even if an outbreak is not occuring -

second off - you would know if you were born with herpes - they give expecting mothers std tests at first sign of pregnancy and towards the end -

i would suggest not drinking after her - i have never heard of someone getting it through useing the bathroom - i think actual fluids must be changed but i wouldnt pass on the saliva thing until its been thouroghly tested - ( my mom doesnt have a disease and i still dont eat after her ) and as long as she isnt shaving with your razor i would think you would be ok -

of course its always best to call a free clinic in your area and ask them questions or pick up a brochure - dont trust web information 100 percent because it DOES NOT have to be accurate - there is always a disclaimer - there isnt one on brochures that hospitals and clinics approve -

Yes, all of that is fine. You will not get it unless you touch an open sore. If she has genital herpes, there's no way you'll get it. If she has it on her face, you may not want to kiss her when she has an outbreak. I'm sorry for her. :-(

Herpes is transmitted by secretions. Unlike love, herpes is forever. There are drugs out there that can supress the virus, like Valtrex. It's okay if she uses your bathroom--LOL. You would have to come in contact with a lesion to contract it.
