I think I am ready to transition into becoming a vegetarian. As of right now I do not eat large amounts but I do eat small amounts of chicken and some beef? - What's my first step?

You've already made the first step--reducing the amount of meat you eat. All you need to do now is just stop eating it. Get a few vegetarian cookbooks and check out www.vegweb.com for more recipes. There are tons of books out there on becoming vegetarian, such as "Being Vegetarian for Dummies."

There are tons of analogues out there if you still crave the meaty texture and flavors--more than I can mention. You're sure to find some you like.

If you're going out to eat, check out www.happycow.net and www.vegdining.com to find vegetarian and veg-friendly restaurants in your area. Try to find out if there is a vegetarian society or Vegetarian or Vegan Meetups where you live.

Good luck!

My suggestion is to do as you are doing right now slowly eliminating meat including chicken & white meat.If fish doesnt' bother you can eat it, as the health benefits are much higher to eat fish than meat.If you do eliminate meat slowly introduce legumes and nuts simultaneously to pump up your protien and even include tofu to your stir fries and curriesI have a friend who doesnt eat dairy, she's got a hard time with getting her protien , but its really up to you.fish is clean and very nutrious, oily fish like tuna ,salmon,e.t.c are great for omega 3 and that helps us greatly with brain and nerve repair is an allrounder.have a think about it, your diet is what you want out of life.

Personally, I just decided I was going veg and then never ate another bite of meat. I just cooked and ordered stuff that didn't have meat in it. Along the way I read up on nutrition and got some good cookbooks and expanded my horizons. It was actually pretty easy. Now I've decided to go vegan. For some reason, this feels like it will be harder for me, so I've stopped eating the obvious dairy and eggs, and have given myself a date for the more fine-tuned stuff (like ferreting out all the products in my kitchen with whey in them.)

The first step would be a good vitamin to make up for the protein that you'll be missing out on-you may also want to visit a doctor to see if there are any other misgivings that you'll be facing when you finally start.
I think it's a great idea, just be sure to do your research and ensure yourself the most healthy future possible by using effective supplements.
Good luck!

I would buy a vegetarian cookbook and fix nothing but Vegetarian meals. Try eating in a Vegetarian restuarant
and get some idea's. Hey, I have an Idea, come on this Caribbean Cruise with me that I'm taking, and I'll make sure you eat nothing but vegatarian!!!

Stop eating the beef and chicken.

Eat food that has protein such as beans, nuts. tofu, cheese (maybe) eggs (maybe)

Add: Ab (below) is wrong. You can not have cold turkey in your diet as a vegetarian. Turkey is meat, so is chicken and fish. Why do so many people think that cold turkey is okay?

I would suggest first going one day a week without meat and then slowly increase it to two days a week, then three and so on. Once you stop eating meat every day, your body won't have gone through such a drastic transition all at once.

Stop buying it...never heard of anyone having withdrawals from it. When you go into the store stay away from the meat department. Go walk by there in about a month and you will see how gross it smells like flesh and blood, enough to turn you off to eating meat.
