I've always wondered about this for if I ever choose to work somewhere that sold meat. I think you should just have a polite word with your boss. Say you don't want to seem like a whiny brat but you really don't feel comfortable carving meat because you see it as going against your morals. I think it's better to explain your reeasons rather than just hide behind the term 'vegetarian' because a lot of meat-eaters dislike the label for some reason and only see it as a choice of what you physically eat.
If that doesn't work you could either grin and bear it or find another job. Personally I would quit and work somewhere a bit more open minded.

I'm afraid that you don't have the right to object to anything that is considered 'reasonable'.
A restaurant prepares many different types of food and this would have been apparent at the time that you applied for the job.
Unless the restaurant is of the non-meat variety, it would be 'reasonable' to expect that a certain amount of meat handling would be encountered.
If you applied for the job without considering your vegetarianism, or making the point directly to the interviewer at the time, you really have no cause for complaint.
I suggest that you put your point forward to the manager and ask if you be allowed to handle non-meat products only, and if this is not acceptable then resignation might be your only way forward.

No because you would loose your job. However you work to earn your living and survive, therefore you shouldn't feel guilty because you haven't killed the animals that you carve nor eat them. With time you may find a job in a vegetarian restaurant or in a restaurant where they don't ask you to carve meat.
Basically you are in the position of a soldier who is unwilling to go to a war that he/she feels that is unjust, but is forced to go because of existential circumnstances.

I believe that being vegetarian has no basis in law which means you have no rites.
The way i see it you have but 3 choices
1-Ask boss nicely if he wouldn't mind you not doing this part of the job (He may not be aware of the legal standing and just cave in)
2-Pack in the job on an ethical basis
3-Get on with the job and accept it all as part of it.Difficult to do, I couldn't.
Good luck.

Why work at those kind of jobs anyways? If your a vegetarian, why not work at a pet store, or the garden center at Walmart, etc. There are plenty of jobs out there were you don't have to carve meat, especially when you feel so strong about it.

You have the right to tell your boss but nicely.
However, he has the right to refuse too as you know beforehand what you are going to face working in the non vegetarian/vegan restaurant. Otherwise you can quit.

No.
The resturant was probably a mixed food resturant when you signed up to work there.
Being a moral veggie is not a legal standing - we'd need a test case to set precedence and that hasn't happened yet...unless you wanted to be the first ??

that's why I don't work in restaurants or anywhere around food.
but honestly in your case you might find another job that doesn't have anything to do with meat. or you might ask for another position that doesn't involve cutting up meat and such. you don't own the business therefore you have no right to tell your boss what you want or don't want to do. you're the one who took the job, the restaurant didn't force you to work there... my advice is try looking for another job.
hope that makes sense.
