She is overweight but somewhat reluctant to lose it I think because the doctor told her that losing weight doesn't always help

either mom misunderstood the doc or she has controverted what he/she said.

Losing weight DOES help lower BP - almost every time.

In fact, EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT (85%) of high BP patients can get off ALL BP medication if they achieve ideal body weight.

Think of the money we would save if we just maintained ideal body weight!!

She should drink skim milk one glass twice a day (proven effective to lower BP and cause her to lose 10% of body weight in 6 months).

She needs fewer carbs, more fiber and more exercise.

Good luck with your mom's good health!!

190/70 is pretty high blood pressure. She needs to get that blood pressure under control. It is true that losing weight MAY NOT help lower her blood pressure; however, losing weight may extend her life.

Weight typically does have an affect on blood pressure. Is there a family history of high blood pressure? If so, she may just have narrow arteries.

Either way, losing weight will be good for her overall health. Unfortunately, losing weight is a very difficult process and she will require help from the entire family.

Good luck.

3 years ago, I was diagnosed - hypertension with a reading of 160/100. I used to feel dizzy a lot, my legs had awful cramps, and levels were very low in my potassium, causing my fingers and toes to always cramp together. One day I started to feel really faint while I was driving with my daughter in the back seat and I passed out, hitting 3 cars and ending up in a ditch. That moment,I knew I had to do something because my meds weren't working. I heard about this diet from a friend and thought I'd give it a shot. The results have been remarkable. In just 21 days, I honestly can't remember feeling this good, my blood pressure went from 175/110 to 125/70.

5 Steps You Can Follow

1. If you are a smoker, stop. Nicotine results in constriction of your arteries and increases your heart rate.
2. If you have to lose some pounds, do it; reducing blood pressure through diet and exercise normally reduces the need for medication.
3. If you love salty snack, cut it down. Salt does not cause high blood pressure in everyone, but lot of people experience trouble with it, so don’t take risk.
4. If you experience very stressful situation in your life, try to eliminate it, or learn stress management; biofeedback, meditation, and other relaxation techniques.
5. If you use alcohol to control stress, restrict its use. Though alcohol does not increase everybody’s blood pressure, but it may increase yours.
