MOst scientific journals reprot that your pancreas (the organ responsible for making enzymes to digest foods) is about three days behind in making enzymes for the foods you eat. That means if you haven't eaten meat for longer than three days, you ability to digest that meat is going to be lacking as your pancreas has not made fresh enzymes to digest it. Some people's pancreas always make the enzyme to digest meat and some do not. I would imagine yours does not and needs a small piece of meat every once in a while to prime the enzymativ pump. This is of course up to you to decide if you wish to eat meat or not.

When I was in the early days of becoming a vegetarian I quit eating meat in phases, I didn't quit all at once. When I had gone for a 2 full weeks without eating any meat and then I did eat some I felt horrible all over, I didn't throw up, though. I did feel sluggish and had a headache just generally yucky.

You get sick when you accidentally eat meat after you havent for a long time because your used to the diet you have changed to and your body has adjusted. When you all of the sudden put meat into your body, it just cant take it. this is because your body has been off meat for so long that it isnt used to meat being in its system. If you are a vegetarian and you decide to go back to eating meat, (which i would never do) you need to put meat back into your diet little by little so your not dumping this load of meat into your body and your body isnt prepared.

Your body isn't used to taking apart meat proteins and other parts anymore, that's why they recommend vegheads reverting to meat to take it slow. I've been a veg since I was a kid now, and I accidnetally ate gelatin a couple of years ago. Bad things happened. It felt like that time of the month, only worse and NOT at that time of the month!

Personally I think it is all in your head. I have a vegetarian friend who ate meat unknowingly, and found out right away and went to the bathroom to get sick, however, another time she ate meat but didn't find out until the next day, and she didn't get sick or anything. I'm not sure, maybe ask a doctor?

Well, I read your profile and I think I found the answer. Cows are herbivores and their multiple stomachs cannot handle eating meat. This could explain why you're so mad too, since putting meat in cow food is one of the things that caused that particular disease.

The body will eventually adapt itself pretty well to whatever you are consuming.
I think that over time a vegetarian will lose a lot of the bacteria in your stomach / intestines that break down meat.
And, I know people who don't eat a lot of vegetables that get upset stomachs when they do.

It's never happened to me or anyone I know. I go vegetarian for some periods, like a month, and then my hemoglobin falls and I need meat, I eat it and no problem. Also here in Greece for religious reasons people stop eating meat for 40 days at Easter, and then they eat a lot of meat on Easter Sunday, and they have no problem.

meat produces some sort of chemical necessary to digest it - maybe you need a build up of that chemical, or be introduced to it gradually before having enough of the chemical to keep it down - or it could just be the thought that you just ate a corpse
