ok, i am not a vegetarian or vegan, but would like to be one day.

i know that vegans are very against anything to do with animals and animal products. and from what ive heard its mainly about how the animals are kept in dirty, unsanitary, unhealthy conditions, & pumped up with growth hormones then brutally slaughtered to feed the mass population.
so my question is, say i have a farm, completely ran and owned by myself and family. we have cows and chickens. we do not raise them for mass consumption. when we need to eat one of the animals we kill it humanly and use all of the body with out waste of it.
i know that the eating of meat obviously rules me out for being a vegan. but i guess the real question is, would it be seen as more of an accepted thing by vegans to eat meat if it was done in this fashion?

ok so i was just trying to get a stand point on why the no meat thing. and its obvious, killing animals=bad. if i was to become vegan it would be for the health reasons. not that i think its way cool to kill animals, but if done in an oxymoronish way, i feel it would be more in tune with nature....think of the indians, they made their peace with the animal - thanking it for its gifts. i know that in this day and age hunting animals is unessesary since we have many more alternatives. but its a bad habit to break i do say. eating meat that is...thank you for all your insightful answers.

I would definitely say it would be far better to raise your own animals for food than to contribute to the factory farming industry. Like you said, it doesn't make you a vegan, but it at least cuts down on the cruelty the animals will have to go through.

That being said, there are other motivations for being vegan than just the way the animals are raised. Humans don't need meat, and the concept of drinking another species' breastmilk is one of the most unnatural things to ever work its way into our society.

I'm sure all vegans (myself included) will wish you went all the way vegan, but the reasonable ones will recognize the benefit of at least trying to reduce suffering. Good luck.

"would it be seen as more of an accepted thing by vegans to eat meat if it was done in this fashion?"

If you mean, would vegetarians or vegans eat meat, never. Would we look upon meat-eaters with more respect? Yes, because it is at least a step in the right direction but to truly earn our total respect, you would need to give up the last, but so crucial act - the act of killing the animal. I don't believe in humanely killing - that's a contradiction. There are bad ways and then there are horrendously barbaric ways.

There really is no such thing as "humane killing." If you want to be a veg*an, you will have to stop killing and eating animals, even those on your farm.

Eating less cruelly produced meat, dairy, and eggs is a step in the right direction--you are acknowledging the utter madness of the factory farming system--but the animal still dies in the end. And that is one of the many things vegans object to.

That would probably depend on why the person in question was a vegan in the first place. Some folks just think it's wrong to eat meat, or anything from animals, regardless of how it's grown and killed. On the other hand, any reasonable person would have to give you credit for your humane practices, even if they didn't feel you'd gone far enough with it.

You can be a vegetarian and still own a farm. You cannot eat what you raise on that farm though and still be a vegetarian. Vegetarians need to cut out all animal meat from their diet and replace it with vegetarian protein.

as a vegan, i don't see it as acceptable to eat meat period. but i'm not saying you have to prove to me or other vegans that you're worthy of eating this animal. eat what you like but please be aware of what you're putting into your body.

i don't see how any kind of killing, whether it's a quick bullet to the head or a slow death by slitting its throat, can be humane. if i shoot a man right in the head, would that be considered humane? no. i killed him. murder is murder.

you don't NEED to eat these animals. the only good thing about eating meat is protein, which can EaSiLy be found in plant-based foods.

best wishes :)

You would not be a vegetarian, but if you are going to eat meat it is better that you treat the animal with respect.

But don't expect to win an award from PETA.

I'm not sure why you'd care what a vegan thinks of your diet. They have such contradictory views that they probably don't even understand their own self. Animals were put on earth to be eaten and certainly there's nothing wrong with eating the animals raised on your own farm. Happy eating....

There is no such thing as "humane killing".

If someone killed you, even if it was completely painless, would you mind?
