Deterrence.
The basic concept of MAD (Mutually Assured Destruction) is that if someone (Russia, China, whoever) decides to use nuclear weapons on us, we have the capability to totally destroy them, also.
It worked for 40 years while we had an enemy that was actually sane, but now we have an enemy that believes that the afterlife is better than THIS life....so the MAD concept won't work as well.

When the first Atomic Bombs were created and tested, radioactivity was not really known, I mean, the explosion is caused from atoms splitting... atoms!!! We didn't figure that one out until nuclear radiation poisoning affected our own men. Roosevelt left Truman to the unfinished project; he had no idea about the effects. That is why today, many nations are trying to disarm the remaining warheads and retire the Nuclear Power Plants. Radiation takes at least 7 years to deteriorate to a safe level... so long, tedious precautions are taken to dispose of Nuclear projects... not to mention that it's expensive.

Not only nuclear bombs but all weapons exist out of distrust in human relations. nuclear bombs can be used even without destroying ourselves. The nuclear bombs used in twin cities of Japan did not hurt those who used these. It should be our endeveour to bring in a civilized and war free world full of happy, healthy and satisfied people. A beginning must be made to start a campaign for destruction of all nuclear arms followed by destruction of even conventional weapons and disbanding of all armies everywhere in the world.

How would a nuclear bomb destroy us ?
There have been over 700 above ground nuclear detonation in the last 60 years, thousands of under ground nuclear detonations.
Were still here, aren't we ?

Actually, we have been using them, but on a very limited scale. A full-scale nuclear war would be devastating, but so far humanity has managed to avoid this. Let's hope we keep staying lucky.
