You could cause yourself to get genital herpes if you touch a cold sore and then touch your genital area. It's called self-reinfection. It's not very common, but it can happen.
That is why is it SO important to ALWAYS wash your hands after touching a herpes sore. If you need to put medication on or touch a herpes sore for any other reason you should wash your hands immediately after wards.
You can also spread herpes to your eye if you touch a herpes sore and then rub your eye after wards. It's called ocular herpes.
Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1, but they can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2. Genital herpes is usually caused by herpes simplex virus 2, but like cold sores, it can be caused by herpes simplex virus 1. I personally have genital herpes caused by herpes simplex virus 1.
Take care!

If you have a cold sore in your mouth and you touch it and then touch your "private" you can spread herpes to that area because a cold sore is a form of herpes.

Only if your cold sore isn't actually a cold sore -- if it's herpes of some variety, it's possible you could transfer it to your genitals. If you're unsure about it, you should talk to your doctor. Always practice safe sex.

A cold sore is a form of the herpes virus. The names "simplex, etc." are the different locations of the virus. so yes if you have a cold sore and have oral sex there is a chance of giving someone genital herpes.

No too sure on that , my guess would be no.
Because those "herpes" on the private parts have their own sores Its a different degree of herpes.( If I'm not mistaken).

A cold sore is herpies simplex one. And I don't think that herpies simplex one can turn into regular herpies. I think that is what you are asking.

the strain of the herpes virus is somewhat different, though if your mouth has contact with genital herpes it may present itself on your lips, but not vice versa
