It's not normal for someone his age, but WPW would definately alter that.
In any case, I would take him back to a cardiologist. However, to remedy the problem for the moment he needs to bear down like he's going to go to the bathroom. Telling him to blow like he's blowing up a balloon does help as well, basically what your doing is stimulating his vagus nerve.
I would also consider buying a b.p. cuff and taking his blood pressure when this happens, because if it's too low(when the heart beats so fast, it doesnt have time to fill, and the less thats in the heart, the less that gets pumped.) he may pass out. (If that happens, don't freak out, but do call 911, it's a relatively easy fix once we get there)
The thing that concerns me is that his heart rate being elevated like that is causing symptoms that need to be addressed (chest pain).

No it is not normal for his age. Usually 5 years and under their heart rate can go up that high normally. Especially not normal having chest pains. I would get another doctor. I would see a pediatric cardiologist.

His resting HR should be no higher than 90 BPM, I would ask for an Echo cardiogram...This happened to me when I was younger and I now have a pacemaker...this is serious and you should hold all his activiies that can cause heart rate stimulation,, until he has an extensive Cardic exam....

Good Luck

Ice on his neck. My niece had this. Better yet, try to blow on a balloon.
