I just bought an EGR sensor from advance auto parts after they did the check on my car and told me this is the problem. I dont know where it is located. i know that it is probably easy to replace but i just dont know where it is. if any one can give detailed instructions on location or a link to a diagram that would be great help. any help or suggestions are greatly apreciated.

You can locate by the 1/2" tube that goes into the intake manifold. It's a pancake looking device with two tubes going to it. One is a very small tube the other is the one to the manifold. The device doesn't fail as often as it did in older cars, but the passage way to the intake often gets plugged. It takes carburetor cleaner to clear the passage way.

Here is a pic of an intake with the EGR attached so you can get an idea of what to look for.
The best thing to do is take out the part and look for that part on the top of the motor. It may not be directly visible you may have to shine a light on the backside of the motor to locate the part.
Be sure to disconnect the battery prior to changing the part in order to prevent any damage to you or the vehicle.

Depends upon the sensor...
If I remember, there are two seperate style EGR flow sensors in use on Explorers.
The 4.0 v-6s (and I think later model v-8s like 1999 or so and newer) Use a DPFE which is a sensor with two hoses that come out the bottom....usually on the v-8s, if it has one, it's right next to the EGR on the back of the intake.
The 5.0 v-8s of that vintage I think still used a different sensor called a EVP sensor... it's a sensor with a plunger on it.. the sensor mounts onto the EGR itself with three screws.. the EGR is on passenger side rear of the intake of the vehicle (right next to the heater hoses covering it up if I remember)..
Happy hunting

I would have let a pro diagnose and replace the broken part. There are to many shade tree mechanics that are getting the code from the local auto part store, buying a part and hoping that it fixes their problem. Remember, once you put it on the car, you own it.
I don't know about you, but my time trying to guess and replace is more valuable to me when it is in the hands of a pro any day and probably cheaper and less frustrating. This is why you are asking how to fix your car based on an auto parts stores scan of your computer!!!!
Good Luck!!

trust "yet another individual" start up with determining why the EGR equipment is showing exessive pass. it ought to or won't be a foul EGR valve. attempt the valve to work out no count if that's working. EGR equipment displaces gas/Air via allowing Exhaust gas into the intake.

ok you have a black plastic cover on top of your motor that has 3 screws take that cover off , then your egr will be there to the right of you will have to use a 10 or 11 size socket to take out the pipe that holds it it kinda looks like a space ship ? ok

well, after you replace it and the check engine light comes on again, replace the DPFE sensor and the 2 silicone tubes that run up to it. im my experience the egr rarely fails, yet the dpfe fails quite often. dpfe is a ford base part # 9j460

on a 4.0 it is on the drivers side of the intake manifold, directly behind the IAC (on the side of the throttle body)
