It doesn't necessarily mean it IS cancer. But HPV can lead to formation of cancer.
It's a whole 'nother story if your doctor actually told you you DO have cancer. If so, then yes, go with that diagnosis.
But in general, HPV is a virus that can cause cancers and warts. Often it causes cervical cancer in women, but it can cause penile cancers in men and anorectal cancers in both genders. New studies are even linking HPV to throat cancers among people who engage in oral sex. Certain strains of HPV don't cause cancer, but can cause genital warts, plantar warts and hand warts.
HPV is very common. Sexually transmitted HPV affects about 70-80% of all adults. There is a new vaccine called Gardasil; it protects against some of the most common strains of HPV. But this vaccine cannot guard you against HPV that you have already acquired. It's still good, though.
Women are most severely affected by HPV and need to get Pap smears every year to ensure there isn't anything wrong with their cervices. If the Pap smear shows something is abnormal in the cervix, then it is likely to have been caused by HPV. Pap smears do NOT directly test for HPV.

HPV is not cancer, it is a virus that predisposes a person to developing cancer in the future. You need to get regular pap smears to watch and make sure it doesn't progress to that point. Often your body will clear the virus from your system within a few years but it really needs to be monitored. There are also something like 80 different strains of HPV- some cause warts and do not have a high likelyhood of causing cancer, others put patients at higher risk. The HPV vaccine that is now available is active against 4 strains of HPV, 2(?) of which are highly associated with cervical cancer development. Do a google search for hpv and you'll get a ton of info.

HPV is a virus. Having HPV makes you more likely to get cervical cancer. You don't have cancer now.
