They started using the term in the 1960's. If it was around before then it wasn't very well known. It's a pop culture term meaning all natural ingredients, and made without chemicals, like fertilizer, insecticide, antibiotics, etc. They are starting to create a formal definition in terms of the FDA, etc., now that things are being labelled that way in the supermarkets. I hope they include heavy metals, petroleum, and things like that. In the scientific sense, "organic" means carbon based compounds.

My business is in Organics but trust me to live organic takes a lot more in a developed world as ours. To literally live organic would be like a tribal in the woods, in sync with nature's cycle.

Best way to lessen the burden on nature is to live green wherever possible like eating organically grown food, avoid use of plastics and conserve energy. By doing this there is a greater transformation of thought and body.

Good Luck!
