This week, I think I've been having palpitations (i.e. I feel like I hear my heart/I feel my heart like being pinched for a split-second/I "feel" my heart).

Is it palpitation? I'm scared... I'm just 18 years old, female, I've had an ECG before but it simply indicated sinus arrhythmia... I am quite healthy. I brisk walk 3 days every week and I walk a lot. I also eat healthy and do not smoke or drink.

Has anyone had this before? How do I know if it's serious? Please help. Thanks.

palpitation is a very nebulous term, characteristically meaning perceived increased heart beat - described as 'I felt my heart racing in my throat', or 'skipped beat'.
This doesnt really sound like what you are describing. It is normal for a lady of 18 years old to have sinus arrythmia and if it takes form of acceleration and deceleration of heart beat it can easily explain your feelings. So no problem there either.
Th clue probably lies in you being scared - you are watching yourself a little bit too much and try to decipher signals you dont understand.
I know it sounds lame but try to relax a bit, you seem to be doing everything there is to ensure healthy lifestyle, the chances of anything wrong with your heart are very remote.

(pls note that no medic will ever say nill, ;-)))

If you feel that you cant shake it off, talk to your GP, maybe some more thorough tests will convince you, if you understand thy are done to calm you down, not because your doctor is actually worried but not telling you...

Good luck!

I to have had this problem and many years ago I had a ekg and It turned out I had sinus arrhythmia too. But anyway, this is around the age where for some reason hormones play a big role in anxiety. What you are doing is exactley what I used to do and that is that you are paying to much attention to your body, everyone can hear their heart beat but we have a tendency to hear things that the average person cant or wont. Try to tune it out, it will drive ya nutts if you dont and this is how you can go into a full blown anxiety attack, and from what Im hearing you sound as if you are a person who will have these attacks if you dont shut this down a.s.a.p. People who tend to suffer from anxiety problems are people who like us who can hear our heart beats and fear it. You are only 18 years old, dont let this bother you, and dont be scared, this is your heart and this is normal, its doing its job. Also it is a known medical fact that heart palpitations are completely harmless they cannot cause long term damage and they are in fact not dangerous at all, only mentally annoying! Good Luck!

The only way you will know if it is serious is to go to the Dr and get checked. There are many different causes for palpitations including but not limited to taking diet drugs or other meds, anxiety etc.... Or there could be a medical reason for the palpitations. Make an appointment with your primary care physician.
Good Luck.

You can only know if it is serious by seeing your doctor. I don't think that the 'pinching' feeling you are describing is normal. Bad things can happen to a young person's heart. Don't mess with it; please see your doctor asap.
