Our local Tesco has a plastics recycling skip. This is not just for plastic bags, but for domestic plastics too (bottles, food containers etc).
Of course, the real answer is to follow the Three R's correctly, i.e. Reduce, Reuse and then Recycle. If you buy / acquire some re-useable bags then you won't need to worry about plastic bags again.
All the best.

Many supermarkets have bins out front where you can take grocery-type plastic bags--just remember clean bags only and turn them inside out first to make sure that no paper--like receipts are still in the bag. If you're talking about department store type carrier bags, ask the department store themselves if they have any info about how to recycle them--they should or they are not being very responsible!

All supermarkets recycle plastic carrier bags but they will also take any SOFT plastics, like food bags, cling film etc. Plastic food containers are not generally recycleable at the moment, but drinks cartons, milk cartons etc are. B&Q at Alfreton have a collecting bin for these. I do not know of other sites.

Our local market has a recycling bin in the front of the store for the bags. They also give you a 5 cent credit for each bag you bring in to reuse instead of taking new bags.

I don't use them myself ~ much preferring cloth bags instead. If you are concerned about your local grocery store not recycling them, you can donate your plastic bags to a local food bank, soup kitchen or local thrift store :).
Another option is to list them on www.freecycle.com There are a number of crafters out there who are crocheting shoulder bags from plastic carrier bags.

You could take them to one of your local shops were i am sure they will re use them for their customers, or take them to tesco, they run a scheme to recycle carrier bags. Next time you go shopping buy a bag for life or buy a proper cotton shopping bag.

The supermarkets take them as already said and then stop taking them, simply take reusable bags each time you shop or even something much more lasting like a trolley bag that sits straight into your car boot then into your home. Everything we do helps :)
I also think shops should take more responsibility and provide or sell biodegradeable bags.
