I'm having my 13th birthday, and there will be 12-15 year old guys and girls. Any ideas for party favors?

Themes can make or break party success

Whether with friends, the guys down the hall or great-aunt Bertha, parties can be fun if a lot of thought and energy is put into the planning and if the guests show up ready to have fun at all costs. So, if you want to know what kind of zany and crazy parties go on when the sun goes down or, you are planning a party in the near future, read on and find out what kinds of interesting themes you could have at your next awesome party.

One traditional staple is the pimps and hoes party. As the name states, the guys come dressed up as pimps while the girls come dressed as hoes. This offers an opportunity to incorporate fun accessories such as feather boas and fishnet stockings into your outfit, but the theme is a bit overused.

"Pimps and hoes parties are overdone, only people who aren"t creative enough have pimps and hoes parties," said School of Art junior Stephen Moss.

Those who want to try something a little different could try throwing a movie theme party. The party will be centered around a specific movies or maybe a series of movies and, people will come dressed as one of the characters in the movie.

In a similar vein, TV shows can offer a great party theme. "The Dukes of Hazzard" has spawned its own example of the genre. Guys come dressed in their finest wife-beaters and girls come dressed in their oh-so eloquent daisy dukes and tank tops. This is basically the party where you want to look as trashy as possible.

Then there"s always the possibility of hosting a pajama party. People come dressed up in their most interesting night clothes. Not only is it fun to check out others in their sleeping clothes but it"s very practical because you can go right to bed after the party. No need to waste time changing when you get back to your room.

Other party themes toy with decor instead of attire. One example is the coed "Twister party." The entire place is covered with Twister boards. You can dance a little, then play a little Twister and get up-close and personal with that hottie you"ve been eyeing.

Another decor-changing bash, the "foam party," incorporates slippery surfaces. "The owners of the house spread foam all over the floor and people just dance and have fun in it," LSA freshman Joe Glionna said.

In terms of decorating ideas, the graffiti party is an option. There is graffiti painted all over the walls, on removal sheets of course. There are no lights on and everything is glow-in-the-dark. People come dressed in white shirts and jeans and each person gets a highlighter when they enter. The party goers write all over each other with the markers.

Or get back to childhood with a game of cops and robbers. At these parties, when partygoers enter the door they get a name of someone else that they have to hunt down. Once they find their partner, the two people are handcuffed together with toy handcuffs.

And the season for Mardi Gras parties is coming up. Each person gets a mask the whole house is decorated in Mardi Gras decorations.

For a real attention grabber, you could always throw a traffic light party.

"People who come to the party come dressed in red if they did not want to be hit on, people wore yellow if they didn"t really care whether or not someone hit on them while people in green really wanted to be hit on," LSA freshman Yumna Mackie said.

This kind of party is interesting and it saves people time in deciphering signals. Partygoers already know which people can be picked up easily and can also avoid people who won"t be impressed with their pick-up lines. But, wouldn"t it be confusing if someone were to wear two or more of the colors? Like, what would you think if someone strolled in wearing a yellow shirt and green pants?

The next time you are planning a party, come up with a theme that is interesting, one that all people will enjoy. "Everyone likes to dress up and go to parties that have a theme," Moss said.

Hi Courtney,

There are some cute and simple chocolate candy party favors that you could use. I'll leave a link to a site in the source box.

One of my favorites is personalized candy bars. It is nice to have your name and birthday, etc. on the candy bars - kind of clever.

If you can't afford those (about 1.50 or so each), there are cheaper ideas and even ones you can make yourself if you like.

This is what I did:

Get chinese food-style boxes in WHITE (they sell them SO cheaply at Smart N' Final - 50 for $5 or something like that). Decorate them in your colors with paint, stickers, spray paint, or anything (I left them white, i believe). Get "shred" in your favorite colors and fill the box about 2/3 up with it (you can always just use a paper shredder to shred colored paper and then slightly crimp or crumple it). Fill it the rest of the way with candy and a computer printed note that says something on it (ex, Thanks for sharing my special day or I had a BLAST at XXX's 13th birthday)

or, custom t-shirts.

For my son's 13th surprise bday party.....we gave out thank you cards (ya know....for coming and all) and inside the card was a $20.00 American Express gift card to spend on anything they wanted. They loved it. If you live near a mall you good give mall certificates, book store certificates or restaurant certificates.

Do a web search for free printable candy wrappers. Choose a birthday one and wrap it around a Hershey bar. Who doesn't like chocolate?
