Depends on the individual. Some people manage to cut off eating meat cold turkey and can do it! I think that's challenging but hey. Or, you can slowly take meat out of your diet then move on to the substitutes (tofu, hummus, etc). I slowly got off meat. Once you do that, you won't have the desire to go back to meat because your use to not eating it. I love being a veggie eater! I think it's best to slowly get off meat, have your body some time to get use to changes instead of drastically doing it. That's my opinion.
Watch out for gelatin and rennent as mentioned because they tend to have animals in them.
Just because your a vegetarian does not mean you will lose weight or become healthy. You can be a vegetarian and still eat doritos, cupcakes, cookies, etc. If you eat your fruits, veggies, nuts, tofu, (a sweet or two won't hurt) excersis and drink tons of water, you are good to go! Here's an excellent site for vegetarians in training:

Also going on google has some more excellent sites also, especially PETA sites.

I think the best way to start is to stop eating animals. Ya know the obvious stuff - chicken, beef, pork, veal, etc.
Then down the road worry if there is some animal by-product in your salad dressing, how jello is made and the ethics of eating honey.
You may or may not lose weight depends on a lot of factors primarily on what you eat instead.

I lost weight being a vegetarian, but I also eat less. Being a vegetarian made me less hungry.
Yes, you should just stop eating animals. Eat more vegetarian based protein as you stop eating animal meat. Do it gradually not all at once.

Well, that's part of it, yes. Just stop eating animal flesh. You also want to watch out for gelatin (the bones, hooves, and hides of animals boiled in a vat), rennet (used to coagulate cheese--it's made from the fourth stomach of baby calves), and meat stocks and fats in the weirdest places.
Check out www.cok.net to get a starter guide and www.vegweb.com for recipes.

well i just quit cold turkey.
just completely get off meat- dont 'ween'.
and there really isnt a need for know-how.
you just eat what you want and dont eat what you dont want to eat- you could not eat anything with a face or just not eat meat, but eat foul and fish- you can be vegan and eat nothing with a face, or anything that came out of a chicken or goat or cow-etc.
or be ovo-lacto or lacto where you eat dairy but no meat or foul or fish, lacto you eat dairy and not eggs ov-lacto you eat eggs and dairy.
but just google simple recipes, go to a local bookstore and get cook-books or just ask another question on here needing advice for such, check out one of my past questions-a lot of people gave a lot of great answers for it- it was similar to this one.=]] enjoyy.

You avoid animal flesh, items made from slaughtered animals and slaughterhouse by-products.
