I wanna give up red meat because of the torturous and painful processes that cattle have to go through, but people say pollotarians are still hypocrites. Shouldn't I at least be getting some credit for giving up red meat and fish? I know it's not pure vegetarianism, but at least I'm trying.

That is how it starts, eventually, once you educate yourself about how other farm animals are abused, you will eventually loose the desire to eat the flesh of pigs, sheeps, poultry etc...

It takes time to become a healthy vegetarian. By letting go of the flesh of cows etc...it is a start. Congratulation! Pick and choose the books you will read carefully. You want the right information, not the gossips from Tom, Dick and Harry.

I became a vegetarian by gradually letting go of the flesh of animals and now, i am proud to say that i been a lacto ovo vegetarian for 7 years. It was quite a learning curve.

It's important to read and learn because, you don't want to become sick because of a poor diet. A person who is educated about the veggie diet will be healthier then the average flesh eater.

Ok, you have credit for not eating some meat nor fish.

Why do you need credit ?

I think you will get criticised because of the mindset. You have posted this in the vegetarian and vegan section, and used the phrase "pure vegetarianism, but at least I'm trying" which makes is seem like you think your diet is related to being a vegetarian. Which it isn't.

Good luck to you, but please stick clear of the word vegetarian to avoid any anti-you comments.

Chickens are actually treated 100 times worse than cattle so in many ways i'd would have thought wanting to give up animals that go through a "torturous and painful processes " you would have started with chickens

None of my closest friends are even close to being vegetarian. I've never met or heard anyone say they hate people who eat chicken. I think you are being a bit dramatic.

FYI....chickens go through the same painful and torturous process. Most of the times..their beaks are removed so they don't peck each other in such close quarters.

You have made a step in the right direction but also took a step back accusing a whole group of hating you.

I can tell you what I dislike. I dislike posts about chicken and fish in the vegetarian section. I dislike the words Pollotarian and pescetarian because they are made up and cause confusion...making people think that they are some sort of vegetarianism. I also dislike, and I'm not trying to be mean, questions from people that contain the words Pollotarian and pescetarian. Those words and so called meanings have nothing to do with vegetarianism.

a vegetarian CANNOT eat meat. This includes fish, chicken, beef, pork, lamb, turkey, mutton, seafood (crab lobster), any kind of fish meal, or meat meal, meat mince. NO MEAT, NO ANIMALS - fish and birds are animals with a face and brain. All the rest- rigatoni( you're kidding?), cheese milk eggs etc you CAN EAT IF YOU ARE VEGETARIAN. IF an animal DIED for the thing on the plate, a vegetarian will not eat it. Of course if you care about animal treatment, and you say you do, then you will be aware that cheese, milk, eggs, yoghurt, butter, cream, ice cream and all the stuff DIARY comes from, is the same kind of torute cruelty to cows chickens, goats and sheep too. So then you would want to become a VEGAN and not eat ANY ANIMALS OR ANIMAL BY PRODUCTS. A vegetarian CAN EAT CHEESE AND MILK EGGS CREAM BUTTER etc A vegan CANNOT EAT CHEESE AND MILK EGGS BUTTER HONEY etc

i'm vegan and the only people i hate are nationalists :P

That said i can understand why you would find someone like that a hypocrit. But as long as you have some kind of logical justification? I dunno, i really don't get it?

Yes you do deserve some respect for trying, but then i worry that it's not making much difference, that while your not eating some meats, your eating more of another meat and infact your meat intake hasn't changed much.

But then maybe it has? I don't know. It's a personal choice, and what ever you can do to cut back on such things is appreciated.

I certainly don't hate you reguardless of what you eat... Just so long as your not a nationalist :P

I am neither a vegan nor vegetarian but the sense I get is not that v/v hate people who choose not to eat red meat.

I suspect most would prefer you be v instead, but most if not all would say giving up red meat is better than nothing.

What tends to really irk the v's are when folks who eat chicken claim to be vegetarians. They tend not to like the phrase pollo-vegetarian. Pollotarian is better, but nobody is going to have any idea what it means. Almost nobody knows what a pescetarian is.

May I suggest you simply say you don't eat red meat.

I don't have anything against them as long as they don't insist they are vegetarians and take an attitude about it. Some people take issue with "pollotarian" and "pescetarian" but I don't see the big deal. If you want to have a name to call yourself, go ahead. Just make sure it's the right name. I think you would be better off giving up chicken and eating fish, but that's your call. If you can live with supporting the poultry industry (the cruelest of all the factory farming industries and well as an importer of illegal immigrants and employer of shameless business tactics) then go right ahead. It's your choice.

I don't think we "hate" pollotarians, but there IS a measure of hypocrisy there. Yes, you're trying. Yes, you're reducing the number of animals tortured and slaughtered for your pleasure. But if you're really interested in making this change for ethical/animal rights reasons, you're fooling yourself if you don't think that chickens are as worthy of your concerns as cows. It's really no different than a meat-eater who makes a distinction between loving their cat and eating a cow. Chickens are tortured as badly as cattle and slaughtered just as inhumanely.

No one should hate you. If they do, they must hate everyone that eats meat, which is a lot of people.

They probably don't hate you, they just don't want you to call yourself vegetarian or any veg word until you give up all flesh.

Pollotarian is a made up word.

I don't think vegetarians hate people who wat chicken. I started out by not eating red meat, then I only ate chicken, then I gave that up too.

I think what is annoying, is when people who still eat chicken (or fish for that matter) say they are a "vegetarian". Just say you don't eat a lot of meat. The label doesn't really matter. :)
