The question "What can we do to protect the environment?" is entirely different than the one most people ask about reducing the carbon footprint--So nice job for asking a different question for a change.
Saving the environment is much much harder than the carbon issue in that environmental damage can be a direct result of trying to reduce carbon emissions. Every solar panel, or CF light bulb or rechargeable battery carries with it a legacy of huge environmental damage. Every single item that is manufactured causes pollution somewhere.
The key to actually saving the environment is to stop creating a need for the things that cause the damage. For example, I may want to buy a new Prius hybrid to lower my CO2 emissions but if I did that then I would be contributing to the environmental damage associated with the manufacturing processes including nickel mining in Canada and battery productions in China that have literally killed the areas around the operations right down to the bedrock.
To actually Save the Environment, consider a few of these suggestions:
Keep your car tuned up. Combine trips.
Learn to live with less lighting. Use lamps where you need them instead of lighting up the whole house.
Adjust your home heating and cooling and use layers of clothing to stay comfortable. Heat less of your house. Consolidate your activities to one or two rooms instead of heating and cooling the whole house.
Eat less meat and grow a little garden. Plants trees or tall plants along the sun side of your house to help cool it in the summer. Buy locally-Avoid foods that have to shipped great distances.
Use what you have longer. Take care of the things you buy so they will last longer. Re-use what you have for other purposes. Donate unneeded items to charity-buy used stuff at charity stores instead of new when possible.
Rethink chemicals. Buy less of them, use less of them. Most cleaners can be cut 50/50 with water and still work well. Be careful of how you dispose of chemicals. Never put anything in your drains that you wouldn't want distilled into drinking water.
Don't drive when you can walk or bike(even a motorcycle is better than a car.) Don't buy new when you can make do or reuse.
Live slower...live with less...maybe then we can ALL live longer and happier.

Change your light bulbs over to the newer low-wattage bulbs--thay decrease the carbon footprint of your household. And check your household for energy leaks such as gaps in your insulation. Shower instead of bathe ( my daughter did a research paper on that one just this past year and it is amazing how much more water baths use), turn off lights when not in use--you know the common sense stuff that most of us just DON'T do.

First of all you can start to use recyled things. Try to avoid stuff which can make pollution after burning it.
You can tell your friends and relatives about global warming and inspire them to plant more trees. You can join some communities who are doing projects to save environment.
Watch news and radios and follow the steps to save environment. If one person will start to do things, every one will learn something from you..
You are thinking to save environment thats great now let's do something good for our earth...

Stop smoking if you are a smoker. Live in harmony with the nature. Stop excessive killing of animals or sea-creatures for food. Balance your food of non-veg and vegetarian food. It not only protects th environment but your own body and soul also.
Be pure in your thoughts and deeds. This is th best way to support a good environment.

I agree with amber. We can all do our bit by not leaving things on standby, walking to the shops and planting trees in our back gardens, but without countries by cuts to their carbon emissions backed by the government there is only so much we can do. Every little helps.

one person can make a huge difference, and you don't even have to be like Al Gore or Sheryl Crowe or anything like that
the best thing that one person can do (besides conserving energy and what they can individually change in their own lives) is to inform people about the problems in our environment and the imminent effects of what we have been doing to this planet for hundreds of years, rally your friends and try and talk to your local government, and even if that task seems too daunting, ask your friends to change their lightbulbs to compact florescents, carpool, anything to reduce, reuse, recycle
every small bit helps

One quick answer... buy your food locally. It costs so much energy and pollution to transport our food around the country.
