Most of the responses seem to be from omnivores, so I thought I'd give a different perspective.

Why does your nutritionist want you to give up dairy? Nutritionally, an ovo-lacto vegetarian diet has more bioavailable nutrients and protein and requires much less planning to ensure you are getting everything you need to stay healthy.

I understand entirely the compassionate reasons for trying to go vegan, but if you choose to do that, that should be coming from your personal convictions, not your nutritionist. A vegan diet is a lot work and there can be serious complications if you don't plan a well balanced one. Most nutritionists will not reccomend a vegan diet unless the individual has already made that life choice.

If you do give up dairy then the easiest solution is to up your soymilk intake. Soy is a complete protein and has the calcium. It is usully fortified to the same standards as commercial cow milk but make sure you check the label to be sure. In my opinion that is the best solution as you could replace with other sources of calcium like spinach but the calcium isn't as readily available for absorption and it lacks the protein and would need further supplementation with beans or nuts, etc.

Dairy is a common allergen. I am surprised the person didn't give you a list of great subsitutes!

There are many different "Milk" on the market, My current fav is Almond Breeze, come plain ,vanilla, & chocolate. Silk Soy Milk has similar flavors. Rice, Oat, Grain & other nut milks. Cheeses are made from Soy & Rice sources. Same with "Ice Creams", cream cheeses. You have to look at your local store if they do not have decent health section then a local health food store They will be very helpful. If you are lucky there is a Whole Foods, Wild Oats or Trader Joes in your area. Any of their personal will help you on this quest.

There are numerous brands of soy milk out there, even soy cheeses (but many have casein, a dairy protein, so be careful), and soy ice cream. As a vegetarian, you're probably used to reading labels, so there's just one more thing to look out for. You use soy milk exactly the way you would use cow's milk.

Soy Delicious Purely Decadent makes excellent vegan ice cream in pints. There's also So Delicious (both brands are by Turtle Mountain) quarts of more conventional flavors. There are lots of great subs for dairy out there.

What about what you want to do? do you want to give up milk yes or no? If no, well stick to milk. If yes, well try some alternative to milk such as enriched soy or rice milk. If not sure, well drink milk now and then and drink enriched soy or rice milk now and then. Nutritionally speaking, low fat milk has good benefits but if ethically you don't feel it is right, well stop drinking milk.

why did your nutritionist want you to give up dairy?
i could understand if she may have helped or encouraged you to stop, but telling you to give up??
why is that? is it to lose weight?
its best to take some supplements for calcium, etc, but otherwise their are loads of things you can eat.
jackets, salads, pasta, risotto, stir frys, currys, and for sweet things you can eat sweets, donuts, some muffins, etc/
good luck

My cousin tried to be a vegan and did it for a year and lost so much weight that he looked like he had cancer or AIDS. You need a little dairy for a healthy diet. You already are not getting protein from meat. Stick with your current diet.
