Living a frugal lifestyle is hard work, but also rewarding.
Some ideas for entertainment:
- Walks in the park and through the neighborhood are how I spend my evenings (I do 3 miles a day.) After awhile you start to become familiar with the people you pass, the buildings, houses, and neighborhood. It's comforting and good exercise.
- I know you said you won't need tv, but consider going on Craigslist sometimes you can find cheap (or free) televisions for under 20 bucks. Or check the thrifties section of your local paper. Even if you don't get cable, renting "classic" DVDs is cheap (under a buck at my video store).
- When you want to eat out by yourself or with a friend, make sandwiches at home and take it to the park for a picnic lunch. I do that a lot.
- I adopted a cat from the SPCA. Cats, unlike dogs, don't eat too much food and are pretty affordable pets. And excellent companions..... yet they can be left at home for a full day or more if necessary. My cat is my best entertainment.
Here's a good website I found about "cheapskates" and frugality. Maybe it has some ideas for you: http://www.cheapskatecharles.com
Good luck on your move!

I love garage sales, thrift stores, and flea markets. Stuff is cheap and I can spend hours looking through all the junk. I love antique stores, too--things are usually out of my price range but I still like to look around.
Check out books from the library. Free and entertaining.
Garden if you have the space to do it in.
There's always volunteer work.
Learn how to crochet if you don't already know how. All the practice supplies you need can usually be found at Goodwill, etc and maybe you can find lessons and patterns on the Internet for free.
Pick a subject you're interested in and research it. Use the Internet and library.
It's hard to come up with entertainment for very little money or free--I know. We spend a lot of family time at the park because it's free.
Congratulations on your new place and enjoy!

I live the same way. My answer will greatly depend on what kind of an area in which you live.
For starters, check out www.walkscore.com.
You can get books from the library.
Surf the web that you said you have.
Learn to sew and then make some of your own clothes. Start biking and walking more, it will save you money and consume time which will be spent getting exercise and looking the area around you.
Cook at home more, saves money and takes time.
Most movie theaters have cheap second run films.
You could start brewing your own beer.
Take part in the fine art of dumpster diving.
visit any public park, garden, community center, museum, or zoo.

hey hobbit! I know how you are cause i amlike that Iwould say go to radioshack and get an electronics kit. It is so much fun to get into!! Or a chemistry set is fun too. If you dont like that then pick up an instrument. I play drums and keyboard and i am fascinated for hours with both. Or you can draw, or maybe sculpture is for you?! Maybe writing poems or music? I love to cook so i spend hours in the kitchen trying out recipes. Maybe you like intellectual stuff like puzzles or chess. It depends on your personality but there are lots of great things for you to do. I hope my list helps you!!!

I do not watch TV either.
On the internet one can join various communities and help people.
One can learn new languages or skills. Write for fun or profit.
One can take up a hobby like bonsai, which occupies little space, highly artistic, in tune with nature, and introspective.
Learn to play a musical instrument (sound proofing the room will help neighbourly harmony in the initial stages, when the music lacks it).

My biggest discovery was the public library ... not only can you check out books, but also all the currant magazines, talking books and ours is in the process of putting together a DVD library. There are also social activities. Also check out your local museums (if so inclined) The Portland Museum of Modern Art offers free admission on day a week to locals. Also, check out local schools and charities - they are always looking for volunteers. And if you like the outdoors .... well, the possibilities are endless.

You can go geocaching. A cheap GPS and you are good to go. I have been to interesting places, waterfalls, caves, beaver dams, memorials ect... because of it and all it cost me was a little gas and the original purchase of the GPS. My GPS was 100.00 but I am sure you can get one on e-bay or on-line less expensive. It is something fun to do and it will help you to make friends in your area. You might find a friend that already has the GPS and you two can go together.Check the forums and see if they are having picnics in your area.Just type in your zip code. Check it out at Geocaching.com.

You could try crafts like knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, lace making, etc. I haven't done much, but origami might be fun. Reading, as suggested, is also a good boredom cure.

if you can pick up a sewing machine, you could join an online community called morsbags - they make bags to reduce plastic bag waste. you could join a 'pod' if you want to be social, or just keep in touch online
