You can go on a low-fat vegan diet--plant foods contain virtually no cholesterol, as it is made in the livers of living animals (including humans). But some people, due to family history, make more cholesterol than others. Just think of that silly commerical where the announcer says that cholesterol comes from X food and also from Y relative. And in spite of my vegan diet, I have elevated cholesterol.

Hopefully you've given up all animal products. That is the single best thing you can do to lower your cholesterol. Next, make sure you're getting plenty of healthy fats. Eat avocadoes, nuts, sprinkle flax seed on cereal or buy anything you can find with flax seeds. I make crackers from them in my dehydrator (it's so easy and they're a great snack - you can google a ton of recipes). I also use flax oil on salads and add a teaspoon to my smoothies and juices. If I'm making any kind of cookie I will add some flax meal.
Remember that cholesterol is a score of your good cholesterol to bad cholesterol ratio. Make sure you doctor told you exactly what your numbers mean so you know best what to do. Also, EXERCISE! Get the heart pumping with some cardio. Even sex is good exercise if it gets your heart pumping (that comes straight from my husband's doctor!).

It depends on whether your high cholesterol is related to genetic influences. I went on an entirely cholesterol friendly diet (no red meat, all poly/unsaturated fats, high fiber, low refined sugars, etc.) and mine went UP! I am not overweight and I'm 26. My total chol. was about 400 and my triglycerides were 368 before taking statins. The statins were the only thing that took it down.

Avoid animal products. (i am NOT a vegan and i eat seafood)
because animals (including humans) all have cholesterol, any animal product has cholesterol.
dont cut them out of your diet if you dont want, but avoid red meat, egg yolks and high fat cheese milk and yoghurts.

just avoid general junk food, alcohol, some nuts, but stock up on benecol-a cholesterol lowering margarine, and other oils and things.
good luck

My father's doctor has him drinking 30ml of red wine a day to reduce his cholesterol and it works. He doesn't drink any other alcohol.

Tips to help reduce fat and cholesterol in your body

Steam, boil, bake, or microwave vegetables rather than frying.
Season vegetables with herbs and spices instead of fatty sauces, butter or margarine.

Try flavored vinegars or lemon juice on salads or use smaller servings of oil-based or low-fat salad dressings.
Try whole-grain flours to enhance flavors of baked goods made with less fat and fewer or no cholesterol-containing ingredients.

Replace whole milk with low-fat or skim milk in puddings, soups and baked products.
Substitute plain low-fat yogurt or blender-whipped low-fat cottage cheese for sour cream or mayonnaise.
Choose lean cuts of meat, and trim fat from meat and poultry before and after cooking. Remove skin from poultry before or after cooking.

Roast, bake, broil, or simmer meat, poultry and fish rather than frying.
Cook meat or poultry on a rack so the fat will drain off. Use a non-stick pan for cooking so added fat is unnecessary.
Chill meat and poultry broth until the fat becomes solid. Remove the fat before using the broth.

Limit egg yolks to one per serving when making scrambled eggs. Use additional egg whites for larger servings.
Try substituting egg whites in recipes calling for whole eggs. Use two egg whites in place of one whole egg in muffins, cookies and puddings.
