Since you can get on the internet, google anemia. Iron deficiency is one form. Iron supplements or iron rich foods may be suggested. B12 is also suggested because you do not process iron without it.
Liver, peanut butter, dried apricots and dark green leafy veggies such as spinach are a few food sources. If your friend is prescribed iron supplements they can cause change in stool and also constipation so remind them to drink a lot of water and get regular exercise to help combat the side effects.

Iron deficiency anemia means they most likely are bleeding some where unless the diagnosis is unknown etiology meaning the can't find a cause for it. The doc will prescribe iron supplements to build up the iron. There is nothing more that needs to be done except be sure the person takes his med and the doc checks his iron levels every few months.

I admire your sevice to humainty, but you have not mentioned sex and hemoglobin reading, any way here is a solution for you:
1) Give him one pint of packed cells, and see his Hb% , if necessary give him a second pint.
The reason being that giving iron by mouth or Intravenously requires a longer time for Hb % to rise up. It's advisable for long term use.
Consult your doctor, before transfusion.
