For those who know -- what are the first signs of herpes?

This is just for my information -- trying to differentiate between herpes/ingrown hair/razor burn/etc?

The first signs I had were large sores that were extremely painful. I was also fatigued and had "flu like" symptoms. My muscles and body ached and I just basically felt horrible all over.

Some other symptoms of a first or primary genital herpes outbreak might include:

Flulike symptoms, such as fever, headache, and muscle aches. These symptoms usually get better within a week.
Tingling, burning, itching, and redness at the site where an outbreak is about to occur (prodrome).
Painful, itchy blisters on the penis, on the vulva, or inside the vagina. Blisters may also appear on the anus, buttocks, thighs, or scrotum, either alone or in clusters. They may be barely noticeable or as large as a coin.
Blisters that break and become shallow, painful, oozing sores.
Swollen and tender lymph nodes in the groin.
Painful urination.
Abnormal vaginal or urethral discharge.

First I want to say that I am so sorry someone as ignorant and uneducated as Felepe was the first to answer your question. Herpes is so common (so many people are unaware of that fact) that there's a good chance our ignorant friend Felepe has it...

You have to keep in mind that not everyone ever has signs or symptoms. The reason 1 out of 4 people have herpes is because most people can carry the disease without ever having an outbreak. Therefore, they never have any idea that they have it, so they keep passing it on.

For those people that aren't as lucky- the first sign is usually feeling pain and discomfort before the bumps show. It feels almost like a sunburn. Within a few days of this pain, bumps will start showing up. Redness also. I hope my answer was helpful. =)

To address Felepe's response - herpes is not an indication that someone is dirty. 1 in 8 people have the virus and it doesn't discriminate - black or white, male or female, young or old, promiscuous or not, your best friend, your neighbour, your family members - anyone can get genital herpes. You can catch genital herpes from oral sex if the person you are with is prone to cold sores - an estimated 80% of adults have the cold sore virus (without visible symptoms), so it is much easier to get genital herpes than you think.

As for the first signs, usually some redness or what looks like a little rash appears, often urinating is painful, flu-like symptoms often appear the first time you have an outbreak. Having said all of that, you can have genital herpes and not ever have any symptoms at all and be completely oblivious to the fact that you have it.

I got diagnosed with herpes (type 2) about 5 years ago, whilst I was still in college and had a stupid one-night stand. there are many ways that the virus can manifest itself, some people get obvious sores, others get an itchy tingly feeling, some get a couple of red bumps. If you haven't done the research you should, asha provides good information and well as westover heights. If nothing else I recommend you get tested, to be sure. You have to request the HSV test, the blood test is the most conclusive if you don't have any symptoms manifesting on the skin.
