In upstate New York, the Adirondack Mountians. Its a wonderfull place to hike and camp.

It's pretty hard to beat the DEC campgrounds in NY.

All of the DEC campgrounds are in the Adirondack or Catskill mountain regions so you can get a lake side campsite and be in the mountains at the same time.

I really enjoy the Adirondak Loj (yes...that's how it's spelled). It is just south of Lake Placid. There are drive-to campsites and lean-to shelters available. It is located on Heart Lake and it has great hiking trails leading from the parking lot.

Roger's Rock State Park in Hague, NY, on Lake George. I have never found anyplace nicer.
