Mushrooms are:
low in calories (l3kcal/kj per 100g when raw)
low in fat and have no cholesterol
low in salt
a good source of minerals, especially potassium
a good source of vitamins, particulorly B vitamins
Mushroom protein is also superior to many other vegetable proteins on account of its essential amino acid content. The white cap mushroom ranks above all other vegetables, except beans and peas in this respect. Between 70-90 per cent of the vegetable protein present can be easily digested.
Mushrooms also make the use of pulses, beans and peas in vegetarian cookery more palatable and enjoyable.

Raw mushrooms have a very high water content (2 grams per cup), but cooked mushrooms can triple that amount, as they lose their water, making it a good protein source (increasing up to 50% their protein content, thus comparable to meat, with a protein of a much higher quality and none of the fats or carcinogens)

RE:
I've read that mushrooms have extremely high protein contents - as high as chicken even. Is this true?

I wouldn't say extremely high. They're superior to most vegetables in both the quantity and quality of their protein, but they probably aren't up there with most meats (in quantity or quality). white cap mushrooms are the best for protein content.

Not as high as chicken, but yes, they do contain some protein.
Approximate analyses of mushroom protein (Pleurotus sp.) revealed that it contains 2.78% protein and 0.14% nonprotein nitrogen on a fresh-weight basis. A total of 17 amino acids, including all the essential amino acids, were qualitatively identified.

this is not true. Mushrooms are associated with vitamins and some minerals with little carbs, no fat and little protein. Mushrooms contain about 2g protein compared to 20-25g protein for chicken (in 100grams)

It is determined by the fruit or plant linked to a comparison. In the event that you compare a n to a carrot, the carrot is the better of the two nutritional. When you compare an avocado to the carrot, then this avocado is better. Both equally the apple and avocado, are fruits.

Not even close-mushrooms have about 3g per 100g while chicken has about 40g/100g.
They sure are tasty though.
