The test they are running is called an HbA1C. Beans are starchy, but they do have protein and fiber. If I were you, and chances are that tomorrow I was going to have to start a diabetic diet I would eat the beans, a few more pumpkin cookies, a chocolate malt, some Cheetos...

Yeah!! A1c test is the one. It measures the glucose sticking to the red blood cells. It is the results of the last 90 days with emphasis on the last 30!! Nothing you can do to change the results of this test in less than 90 days!!

Go get some books from the library. Diabetes, the First Year; and Atkins Diabetes Revolution. You and your mom should both read them.

There is no such thing as a Diabetes Diet!! Each of us is an unique individual and different foods react differently for each one of us.

Go ahead and have your refried beans tonight!! I truly wish I could join you but they make my glucose levels reach for the moon. But as I said each of us is an unique individual and as such are so very different!!

Dietitian told me that beans are the perfect food for diabetics. They are low calorie, low carbohydrate, high fiber, no fat!! However I cannot eat them at all. Yes, I have a few spoonfuls every once in a while. That is to keep from having cravings!! Cravings lead to insanity! Insanity leads to . . . vacuuming the fridge!!

f you are 'borderline' diabetic, thats something like being 'a little bit pregnant'. 8^) You should act as if you were a full-blown diabetic because someday soon you might be. You need to learn to control your blood sugar with diet and exercise--both are important.

Different kinds of foods affect different diabetics differently. You learn how different things affect you by testing your own blood after eating. So you should get a blood meter and start using it after meals.

I find beans are not too bad for me. Yes they have some carbohydrates in them but they are relatively low on the 'glycemic index' so they don't affect your blood sugar that much. At least that's true for me. Beans have a lot of good stuff in them, like fiber and vitamins.

Refried beans also have a lot of fat in them, which is both good and bad. Fat slows down your absorption of carbohydrates, so your blood sugar doesn't rise as fast. That's good. But the fat is not good for you. The BEST refried beans have a lot of bacon fat. And bacon fat, naturally being the best-tasting fat, you know it's the worst for you. Diabetics also have to be careful about cholesterol.

Good luck!

Yes you should. 1. beans are high in fiber which will slow down the metabolism of the carbohydrates and cause a less spike in blood sugar. 2. it contains Magnesium. Deficiency in Magnesium, Chromium and Vanadium leads to diabetes. Eat foods high in the 3 nutrients and eliminate wheat. Stay away from anything that has been bleached. Chlorine foods oxidizes and creates a bad chemical reaction (in bread) that causes diabetes. Increase meats, portion control on vegetables and fruits. No wheat. Portion control on potatoes as well.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/p8wa2
As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.
