Talk to Ashley... she has one and I think she'll let you join...
As for starting your own... I'd be quite cautious about that... you will very well be sued many times and it will cost you in effect a fortune for a multitude of reasons. I'm not trying to discourage you if that is your calling... but you need to look into the sacrifice it will require.

I'm not sure why you want to start your own but you might try for a more local approach- find a niche, PETA is a national/global.
To help stop cruelty boycott beat and animal products that are cruel. Write letters to congress about reforming USDA slaughterhouse standards. Read books like Fast Food Nation and Slaughterhouse to get revved up- do research, lots of research, so that when you make arguments and cite activities, you are informed.

ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) is out there too. But the only thing I can think of that you can personally do is spread the word by making a leaflet and giving it to everyone who owns a pet that you meet, distributing it to pet stores, to people who place ads on giving away their pets, etc. that says how an animal should be treated and that if they can't treat it correctly, to please try to find it a good home - don't throw it away or kill it. There are probably internet sites you can go to as well to "tell your story" to about taking care of animals, getting them "fixed" so they don't have unwanted babies, etc. In other countries, this won't work since a number of them eat animals that Americans have for pets (dogs, horses, etc.)

You can donate money to the SPCA or Humane Society, or volunteer at your local SPCA. The SPCA needs people to walk dogs, clean cages, and just keep the animals safe. Another good idea, if you have a strong heart and willingness, is to get involved in animal rescue. You would be rescuing animals from abusive owners, and bringing the owners to justice. Animal-rescue is not for the faint of heart. But you would be doing something good for the animals and the community. Animal-abuse is a severe problem in this country, and by people resucing the victims is a giant step to combatting it. We may not get rid of it all completely but you can save those unlucky souls and give them a second chance at a happy, peaceful life full of love, companionship, and good care.

You can do your part just by not eating meat, or supporting the meat industry in any way. It seems like a small step, but the more veggies there are, the less demand for meat. If people had any CLUE as to the truth about meat, or if they had to slaughter and butcher their own meat, there would be many more vegetarians than meat eaters in the world. Its all a matter of brainwashing from the meat industry that people buy into, and the fact that they can get their meat in a neat little package at the store, without having to give any thought to the conditions the animal lived in, the toxic stuff that was pumped into it, or the cruel way it was slaughtered. Basically, its out of sight, out of mind.

Quit stealing our oxygen and start your own then. Do you need a reach around and a loan to get it started?
