I know someone had diabete in his 40s, and he is kept saying he can't live longer than he original could since he had the illness. However, I don't really think diabetes affect one's death rate that much, or does it?
Please give me a source so I can show it to that person.
Thanks.

Type two diabetics can live as long as anyone else... even longer provided they take proper care of themselves. A proper diabetic diet and exercise program, with good weight management, can add years to your life... with or without the disease.

I am assuming he has developed Diabetes type 2 (which we used to call Adult Onset diabetes).

He can live a normal lifespan - but he will need to do a few things:

1) Keep his hemoglobin A1C below 6.5 (this is a blood test that measures how his sugras were for the last 4 months). This is the CRITICAL measure of diabetic control.

2) Get to ideal body weight - for males that is roughly 110# for 5 feet tall...and add 6# for every inch taller than 5 feet (plus or minus 10 percent).

3) Exercise VIGOROUSLY - e.g., biking or running or swimming or ellipse exerciser. While walking is great - it is NOT as good as getting the heart rate up.

4) Cut back on senseless carbs - pop, juice, white bread, candy, etc. Avoid alcohol - that hurts the pancreas as well as severely elevating sugars.

5) Increase fiber - try Fiber One cereal or All Bran added to yogurt, other cereal etc.

6) Regular check ups - diabetics get heart disease which is "subclinical." They can have blocked arteries and have NO symptoms!!

7) Get yearly eye exams - diabetic blindness can be treated >90% of the time - IF it is caught early.

No one is perfect. But if diabetics aspire to the above modalities - they can live as long as nondiabetics.

Documentation? 21 years of medical practice, countless studies and check out the American Diabetic Association website (ADA).

In fact, if your friend is Type 2 as I suspect (based on age) - he can achieve sugars which are essentially non-diabetic!!

I am a type 2 diabetic and it is always suggested that the compications of diabetes will probably kill you earlier than if you didnt have diabetes. You can however live a long and fairly normal life if you can keep your sugars under control and avoid the complications.

They do say the diabetes CAN lower life expectancy by 10 years due to complications of the disease, like kidney problems, heart disease and blood clots. However, if a person manages their diabetes effectively, they can also live a normal heathy life

I know alot of people with both types and basically you can live a long life as long as you control the disease, but for those who dont it can lead to a shortened life for many reasons.
