What machete would you recommend for chores around the campsite? I have been thinking about the Woodsman's Pal or the Gerber Spec Knife. Regarding the Woodsman's Pal, I wonder how usefull the hook is? Also, I have ruled out the US Army machete as they are too flimsy and too long.

Hi, If you go to specialprojects.com you'll get to Cold Steel's web site. They have variey of machetes that I can atest to the quality. They sometimes have seconds up for sale that I can never find ANY defect or why they even call it a "second". They also have a GREAT catalog and DVD that they'll send you diplaying all their fine egded products and how they test them. Dr. Bob

Ditto NJ Guy...What the heck do you need a machete for?

In my 23 years of camping I don't even recall any time when I needed a machete, much less happened to have one "just in case". An axe...yes. A hatchet...yes. A saw...yes. But a machete?

Most campgrounds are pretty void of debris and underbrush and if you are planning to chop out a new campsite in the woods I strongly suggest you change your camping tactics and come in line with Leave-No-Trace Guidelines...which by the way are adopted (and enforced) at all Federal and most State camping areas. So be thankful you are getting only a kind warning from a Leave-No-Trace Instructor and not a fine from a park ranger.

Dr. Bob's right on. Cold Steel machete's are dirt cheap and high quality. I have one I use while riding my four wheeler to clear the branches and it works great and holds an edge pretty well. Consider ordering a Lansky Puck sharpener as well. They dress up machete blades real quick and help to work out burrs in the edge when you miss with the different grits on either side.

Where do you plan to go camping? Unless you plan to go hacking through dense jungle, the answer is that you simply don't need one. A good knife is a nice tool to have available, but you probably won't need anything more than a 4" blade. If you need to cut wood etc... how about looking into getting a wire saw?

There is no reason you need something like that when camping! You'll wind up cutting yourself or someone else who doesn't know how to handle that size blade. Why do you think you need it?
