Im supposed to be holding a flat party on Saturday night - partly because my flat has just been refurbished, and partly because I have a new flat mate moving in this week.

Initially a lot of my friends said they were coming (probably 20-30 people), but now quite a lot of these have pulled out, and I only have about 6 people confirmed, plus a few more possibly coming.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make this an enjoyable night for everyone despite the fact that there will only be a handful of us there?

Thanks,

Just downsize the party and don't mention to any of them that most of the people have pulled out. Serve some better food now that you will be having a party for 6 instead of 30. How about some great pomegranate martinis? Actually, having 6 friends over is more enjoyable than 30 people dropping in and then back out anyway. Make it really special.....and those that didn't show up will hear about it and be sick they didn't take the time to attend.

Make it a diner party rather than a "party" party.

You can order out food or cook yourself. If you or your flat mate like to cook then it can be even more fun for you. If you don't have a table to fit everyone it's okay. I have had dinner parties where we all sit in the living room with our plates one side tables or, even, our laps.

Diner parties are a nice change, these days. Instead of tons of people you get the intimacy of a few. You can all easily talk with each other and not have to drift from person to person or group to group.

Start out with some simple hors d'oeuvre like nachos, chips or veggies and dip, or cheese and fruit. Perhaps a salad or soup, next, then a nice diner that's easy to make and won't put you out financially, and serve some wine, beer, or whatever you and your friends like. After diner you can all sit around and enjoy your drinks and company before dessert (a store bought cheesecake is always a decent bet) and hang out more after dessert.

If you're not sure you all can keep the conversation going rent a selection of movies and let your guests decide which they'd like to watch. I'm sure, though, you won't need the movies.

You can also call the ones who will be coming and ask if they wouldn't mind bringing some food. Then you can have a buffet of the different foods everyone brought.

best of luck.

Make sure you invite the other people in the building, especially if you don't know them. That will add a new element to the event, new people - and might make it more fun to live in the building.

Instead of anticipating a large and noisy gathering, since it may end up being small, focus on more intimate music, and make it a chance for people to actually talk and get to know one another.

Put everyone to work - have a bowl at the door with slips, each slip has a job and a time frame (Make sure ice bucket is filled and ash trays emptied - 8-9, or You are in charge of the music from 9 to 10) Helps people get involved.

General rule for good parties - provide the space, the food and drink and interesting people. Then stay out of their way.

if you have 2 or 200 people there
as long as you enjoy yourself with your GUEST/s

Makes no difference if there are 6 or 60 people - a party is what everyone makes it. If there are a small number then find something everyone might enjoy like a DVD trivia board game. How about one of those mystery games where you tell everyone when they arrive which character they represent and what information they need to tell about themselves until someone figures out who the murderer was. Do a cooking party, let everyone bring something original so everyone can share.

Invite your neighbours so they don't complain about the noise!

Sometimes these are the best parties! If you want more people, invite the neighbours, always a good way to get to know the people in your street if you don't already know them.

What about having a games night where you open up the wine, put out loads of dips and snacks (or just order loads of pizza) and team up and have a great game of Trivial Pursuit / Charades / pictionary / cranium etc. Would be great fun! Put some good music on in the background and scatter loads of cushions around for people to sit on.

Sup bro~! haha I been there were friends say they will come and than I get a phone call saying they can't. It sucks as hell but all I can say id oh well, more fun for me...

Anyways, too make it more fun throw a dance in. Buy a lot of food....soda, pizza, beer, (shots) bbq, Chinese food, ice, and other stuff. People come just for food and dance. Get a balance of girls and guy in the house. Ask your sister if she has friends that want to come. Ask your girl friends if they want to invite some of their girl friends to come and tell those friends to invite their friend. That is what I do to get more people to come if I'm short. Don't invite too many folks though. Anyways, when you have the girls in your house, the boys will be dieing to come. Get drunk and the party will be a blast.

This happened to me once, and I thought I was going to die as one person after another phoned to cancel!

Having said that, it turned out to be one of the best parties I've ever had or been to! Instead of using our huge den (as planned), I used the smaller deck (which I couldn't ever have used with many many people). My sons sorted out the music for me, some was for dancing, and some was for eating by . . . Maybe you know someone who can do the same for you? Music makes the atmosphere!

Make sure that on the night, you have a chair for everyone who might pitch up, but don't stack them tight against the walls (as you would have maybe had to do if everyone you invited your party decided to attend).

Maybe (since there will be less people and a bit more time for you) you and the new flatmate could introduce a theme? I was thinking along the lines of a "Welcome" theme - quite a challenge to think of what to do to make guests aware WITHOUT WORDS of 'welcome to the new-look' AND 'welcome to the new flatmate'!

Hope that it all turns out magical, and that you report back when its done!!

Tell everyone you've decided to host a "Pub crawl" instead and head to the bars. Or call and reserve a large table at a swanky restaurant, I'd recommend happy hour time for best deals on apps. and drinks and go for live music after wards. Either way you should honor those who are following through.
Cheers!
