It could be lots of things. It's unlikely that it's the coffee, though. The Coffee-Mate® has so few calories in it, that it's doubtful if that's what is causing it. If you're not sure what's causing it, try eliminating different things for a day or two. If there are no other calories from sugar or carbs going in, then the only other possible cause of the rise is where his liver is converting glycogen into glucose. There are many reasons for this. Among them, are stress and a host of others. That process is triggered by hormones. There's no way anyone here can pinpoint what's going on in his case.

Equal or Splenda should not raise the blood sugar. I use both and never had a problem. But the creamer that I use will raise my blood sugar. So he needs to check his sugar before and after and make sure that he doesn't use a lot of creamer. Also should not skip breakfast. He needs to eat 6 small meals a day and count carbs and calories.

more info needed. Is he testing blood sugar before coffee or after?
If my sugars are high I go it black. Even coffeemate has a few carbs and how much is he using. I caught myself pouring a whole lot of coffeemate in to make up for the sugar I craved!

As soon as I wake up my blood sugar starts to rise, even if I dont eat. I am on the pump so when my feet hit the floor, I give myself 1.5 units of insulin. Then I have coffee. Its not the coffee that makes it rise because sometimes I dont always drink coffee. It is the waking up process

I am not a diabetic but my hubby is- he was using splenda in everything for about 3 months, and his blood sugar went through the roof- and also had other complications from artificial sweetners- I would recommend not using them

I would think that if it is not morning highs, which is common in some diabetics, than probably the coffee mate. That stuff has carbs in it.

I am diabetic and often have higher blood sugar in the a.m. my doctor told me it is because the liver secretes sugar while you sleep at night causing your blood sugar to go up.
