You're right, cold sores are NOT a STD, however they are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which is the SAME virus that causes genital herpes.
The reason cold sores are NOT considered a STD is because the most common way of contracting them is through kissing someone who has them. Genital herpes on the other hand IS considered a STD because it is almost always sexually transmitted.
If "Jane" has a cold sore (caused by HSV) and gives "John" oral sex it CAN spread to "John's" genital area and cause him to develop genital herpes. It's all the same virus!
Cold sores are usually caused by herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV1), but can also be caused by herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2).
Genital herpes is usually caused by HSV2, but it can also be caused by HSV1.
I personally have HSV1 as genital herpes. I believe (although I don't know for sure) that the guy I had sex with contracted the virus from receiving oral sex by a girl who had cold sores.
Good luck and take care!

Yes, Jane, John can very well get Type I HSV (herpes symplex virus)(ie a cold sore) on his genital area. The symptoms are not quite as severe as they would be if they were Type II HSV, but they are about the same: blisters, sores, possible swollen glands, fever, general illness, itching in the site of the sores, etc. The virus does not go away, and can be transmitted to you in your genital area as well. Let's hope he's understanding...

Yes! Even though the cold sore is oral, you can still get it in the genitals. Also, if you had genital herpes, you can get it on the mouth.
There are two types of herpes (most common ones anyways): HSV1 and HSV2. Though HSV1 is most commonly oral and HSV2 is most commonly genital, they can switch places!!! BE CAREFUL! This switching happens all the time!

Yes he will get genital herpes. It will be a different strain but it will be herpes just the same. That is why you should always insist that a condom be used for oral sex on a man and a dental dam for oral sex on a women etc.

Yes. It is risky.
Herpes is a contagious infection that's caused by the herpes simplex virus. One type of the virus - herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV1) - can lead to cold sores around the mouth. An infection of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV2) can lead to genital herpes, a sexually transmitted disease that causes blisters and pain in the genital area.

An STD will also be transmitted through oral with out ejaculating! The man must get himself checked out earlier than doing anything sexually associated! It is now not fair on the girl.. Although if I was her and that i used to be suspected of someone having an STD, i wouldn't go near them unless I knew they were fully clean!

Yes you can. I caught genital herpes via that means and my partner had no visible signs of a cold sore at the time either.
