I've always been fond of soy milk so I've been drinking it since I've been a vegetarian. Now, whenever I have cheese or mayo or white mocha or other dairy stuff, I get a sour stomach right away and now I'm avoiding dairy products. I think I'm developing lactose intolerance.

Also, my mom doesn't drink regular milk (she drinks soy) because it makes her sick and she also doesn't eat certain cheeses.

There is not link between you being a vegetarian and you being milk intolerant. Lot of people are mile intolerant. Me being one. I get a product called Lactate free milk. Tast just like milk only without all the digestive problems.

Vegetarian= no flesh (but dairy is accepted)
Vegan= no animal products

To the person above me, I think you need to look over the definitions. Vegetarians still can eat dairy. lol.

And to answer your question, the chemicals in your body change, usually around puberty. I'm remembering this stuff off the top of my head, so don't quote me, but I think its lactase that your body stops producing adequately, so many people do become a little intolerant by a certain age. Try no dairy products for a little while! You may like it :)

My boyfriend feels the same way so we buy and use non-dairy products for just about everything except for all the gourmet cheeses I am addicted to. But I would feel sick if I drank a glass of cow milk after most of my life never drinking it. Basically, I just think it would be hard for me to digest (physically and, to a degree, mentally). Nothing to to with lactose intolerance for me.

That's not a problem if you feel you should stop eating dairy. You don't need dairy anyway. You can get all your calcium from leafy greens, grains and nuts and all the normal real fresh food you eat anyhow. Adult humans aren't meant to suckle on their own mothers for breast milk to get nutrition, so we don't need to suckle on cow mothers either. If you're concerned then try goat's milk and goat's milk cheeses (Attiki fetta is a good one with non animal rennet) - it's meant to be OK for lactose intolerance.

I have IBS and dairy will upset my stomach. I can't drink a glass of cow's milk anymore without it upsetting my stomach horribly. You could also be developing a lactose intolerance. Go to your doctor and relate your symptoms. It shouldn't have anything to do with your vegetarianism though.

You could either have some lactose intolerance linked to maturing (not becoming vegetarian) or it's possible it's the fat in these items, since mayo contains no dairy. Try low fat dairy and lay off the fancy coffee-it's full of fat and sugar anyway. If cutting the fat back works, you may want to talk to the doctor about a gallbladder exam, since gallstones can cause this reaction to fat.

I've read that most people develop an intolerance to diary in their late 20's, but it's most likely that becoming a vegetarian had nothing to do with it. If either of your parents are lactose intolerant or other family members are you could just have naturally developed it.

It usually develops with age. It happened to me. I used to drink milk and eat cheese all the time when I a child, then around the beginning of high school I couldn't have milk or ice cream and then cheese started to bother me. You could try taking lactaid or just give it up all together. You'll hardly miss it once all the casein gets out of your system.

i went lactose intollerant when i was about 27 -- i have a cousin that did at the same time. most people develop it later i think. i prefer rice milk to soy milk. yum!

mayo has no milk in it -- it should be oil and eggs with some lemon. if you make it at home thats what you use anyway.

well, my neighbor got a sour milk at school once and she can't drink it without throwing up around 30 years later. i had something weird with my stomach as a little kid. the doctor told my mom not to give me dairy since. i went from drinking a lot of milk every day to none at all, i only eat ice cream, and melted cheese (cause not melted is all cold and gross) it is just that you have told your subconscience that dairy is bad and that you can't have dairy, and dairy is gross, and if you drink milk, you will throw up because your subconscience says it is gross and you can't have it. if i was forced to eat chicken, i would vomit because for 11 months, i told myself that i can't eat meat. so it is really all in your head (more precisely your subconscience)

I don't think you can "develop" a lactose intolerance just by becoming vegetarian. You may want to see a doctor about it.
