Hi, there. Some people's sugars ARE affected by Equal. I would recommend that he either use saccharin (Sweet-n-Low) or that he use Stevia, which is an all-natural sweetener with zero side-effects and zero carbs. Saccharin has been around long enough that it's known to be safe, and it has a good taste. Stevia is made from a plant. You can buy it in packets, just like the other sweeteners, at any health food store and many retailers.

I have another question, 'though: does he put anything else in his coffee? Milk, cream, or non-dairy creamers can all cause sugars to rise.

I wish you luck!

Shouldn't do anything to his sugar as it is a no calorie, no sugar sweetner. Personally, I use Splenda but use Equal at times and never have a minutes trouble. Is he using creamer? That has carbs, even the non dairy kind and that will make his sugar jump.

equal/aspartame isn't really good for you, but that wouldn't have an affect on his blood sugars.

i really think you should discuss this with his doctor. you can try splenda or stevia to sweeten coffee, but again, this wouldn't affect his sugar all by itself. he may need some dietry changes or change in medication.

baked goods/desserts/candy made with equal are not free foods. they generally contain carbs, sugar alcohols, fats and god knows what else.
