I am not a vegetarian, but I know that there are many family's that raise their kids as vegetarian and they turn out healthy. Although I think the would have to eat a lot of foods that are high in protein. Like beans etc. I am sure with good research a child can eat a healthy vegetarian diet and get all the nutrients needed for development.

Technically, you can eat pizza, chips, and beer 24/7 and call yourself vegetarian-- but in general if you're vegetarian you're doing it for health reasons or out of empathy for animals lives.

The truth is that the average American actually gets 2x+ more protein than their liver will bother to process per day (americans eat more protein than their bodies actually need and the liver won't synthesize the extra protien). Even lacto-ovo vegetarians (vegetarians who eat eggs and dairy products) will overdo protien since they are so worried about not getting enough.

I was raised vegan and am now lacto-ovo vegetarian. My blood tests have always been perfectly healthy. The main thing to keep in mind regarding protein if you're going vegan as opposed to vegetarian is to consume a wide variety of nuts and legumes. Don't just stick to soy. Eat lots of raw nuts and legumes (raw nut oil is "good oils" while oil from roasted nuts actually convert to "bad oils") like almonds, cashews, pecans, peanuts, peas, lima beans, kidney beans, chickpeas/garbanzo beans, red beans... it's easier than you might think. Hummus, (pea)nut butters, chili, and japanese mochi all have beans in them not to mention if you use tofu, all kinds of great things can happen (you can find soft, firm, or extra firm tofu and they can be used as a replacement in most meat dishes).

Just know that eating a WIDE variety of food is absolutely key to a successful vegetarian or vegan diet.

Sure it is, if its a well balanced diet that is rich in all of the essential nutrients. My 12 year old daughter has been a veggie for years, and she is very healthy and fit, with glowing skin, shiny hair and strong nails. Her omnivore friends are dealing with acne and weight issues, but my daughter has none of those worries. Just be sure to balance healthy proteins, such as in beans, legumes, pulses, spirulina, quinoa, rice and other sources, with leafy greens, fresh fruits, and veggies, and seeds and nuts. which are a great source of protein. Fresh veggie and fruit juices are a great way to get vitamins and minerals without the need for supplements.

No you need a good balanced foundational diet that is "normal". When you stop growing, then maybe look at it. But don't look at it too closely, being a strict vegetarian or vegan nutter in today's society is worse than telling people you have an STD.
