Well you can survive with low amounts of protein but your body does need it to grow and function properly such as the development of muscles and in cell reproduction. So even if you don't eat meat you can still get protein from dairy foods like cheese milk and yogurts, or legumes and certain vegetables like beans and mushrooms.

Of course you need protein but not nearly as much as Americans have been brainwashed into believing by the dairy and beef lobbies. Excess protein is an immune system irritant, taxes the kidneys and leaches calcium from the bones.

If you are getting enough calories from a balanced diet, you're getting plenty. If you're eating meat, it's more likely that you're too much than not enough.

Vegetarians get plenty of protein from a variety of sources: soybeans and all the many products made from them, beans and other legumes like lentils and peas and peanuts (and peanut butter) and chickpeas, nuts and seeds, whole grains, fruits and vegetables (especially dark green veggies,) even mushrooms have protein.

Ask your friend if he's ever heard of kwashiorkor. I'm sure he hasn't. It's the disease caused by protein deficiency. And unless you're either eating just junk food or you're not eating enough food at all, you have nothing to worry about.

You don't even need to combine your proteins, as amino acids are stored in your liver and combined as needed. So you can have veggie chili (with beans) at one meal and a rice pilaf at another, and you'll be just fine.

Most people eat WAY too much protein, they don't lack it.Ask your friend, has he ever heard of anyone that has had a protein deficiency, have you ever heard of anyone on the news dying from a lack of protein? No,because it's pretty hard to do.If you are eating natural whole, foods like beans, nuts, whole grains, soy, etc and you are consuming enough calories for the day, you're gonna get enough protein. The only way I would say you could develop a protein deficiency is if you are starving yourself or if you are eating nothing but processed, surgary junk food.

it's protein and it's very simple to get on a vegetarian diet. tofu, beans, nuts, dairy, leafy green vegetables, etc. and if you're still eating some meat, as i interpreted from your post, you are getting plenty protein.
