I use herbal remedies or homeopathic. Most medicines just cover up the symptoms, and don't treat the cause anyway-the symptom is your bodies way of letting you know something is wrong, so just treating the symptom is useless. And, most medicines cause side effects beyond the initial problem. As for chemo, I was diagnosed with leukemia, and it was recommended that I go on chemo. I also had other chronic medical issues that the docs just wanted to medicate. I declined ALL of the meds, and the chemo, and healed myself by adopting a natural, whole food, organic, vegetarian diet, and avoiding toxins, whenever possible. I used herbal teas and home remedies, and now, I am perfectly fine-that was over 4 years ago. I have little faith in standard medications and their side effects. Thats just my personal take, but I do understand when people choose to take medications to treat illness-sometimes it just can't be helped.

I can only speak for myself in this matter. I live as cruelty free as possible. If I need medication than I sued it, only because there is not cruelty free alternative. If I can use herbal meds I do.
I don't take medications for every little thing, I don't pop tylenol for a simple headache, I'm not going to die, or infect others with a headache. If I have strep throat I take antibiotics because that is the only way to get rid of it, but for the most part I don't pop pills for every cold or sniffle.
In avoid medications when I can, but if it is really necessary than I am not going to put my life on the line. It like people who are religious, they believe God will help them, and take them to heaven if it is meant to be, but they do not sit at home avoiding medicine/treatment.

Vegans do all they can to be as cruelty free as possible. If they need medication, then of course they'd take it. It's not their fault they're sick and I'm sure if there was a cruelty free option that didn't involve staying sick, they'd do that instead. It's impossible to be 100% vegan unless you live like Amish people, but even then there would probably still be a few conflicts. The point of being vegan is to just be as cruelty free as possible, possible being the key word.
Why not just not take medication? Um...maybe I should have clarified:
The poing of being vegan is to live as cruelty free as possible. "live" and "possible" are the key words.

I never thought about that. I just limit animal crulity as much as I resonably can; it's not a complusion for me.
I only take meds when it's really important and the best option(it often isn't).
Also, I rarely get sick.
Meg - You seem full of hatred for a large group of people who are trying to live well and have done nothing to you.
- "I believe that when someone decides not to have meat in their diet, it has serious effects their thought process"
What is that belief based on???......
..............thought so.
Ppl should study up before forming a belief.

For so very long I avoided taking meds of any kind, but 5 years ago I was diagnosed with emphysema. This happened long before I decided to become a vegetarian. I have no choice but to take certain meds for my lungs, I would die without them. I'm still careful about products that I use like hair and skin care products so I don't use the ones who do animal testing. I don't wear animal fur or skin.

Medical science is shifting away from animal testing-a lot of medicines are not tested that way anymore. Kinda shoots your question down.

You do what you can. You try to live a cruelty-free life, but ultimately your health comes first. I would think most would avoid it when possible, but sometimes you have to take medicine.

You are correct. Animal testing is a stage in the process for FDA approval and a logical scientific step in creating new medicines to save human lives.
Most vegans seem to be "vegans of convenience". That is when faced with health care issues--especially serious or chronic ones--they aren't too picky about whether or not animals used in testing.
Some vegans try the various homeopathic remedies available to them, but when they don't work---bring on the "animal tested" medicines.
Like some witty, but correct person wrote on here, there are very few vegans that are martyrs for their cause.

Not the TRUE VEGANS. True vegans are like the early Chrisitians who are willing to die rather than give up their values.
True vegans would lay down their lives to save a lab rat. It is true that many medicines go through an animal testing phase and so true vegans should avoid medicines.
If the early Christians could face the lions, true vegans could do as much.
