My family is going to our cabin this weekend, and we always have a few drinks. My mom is a borderline diabetic, so she can't drink most drinks. I don't like seeing her left out, I was just wondering if anyone knew of any drinks that she would still be able to have that wouldn't affect her blood-sugar too much???

what i mean is... we used to get together and have a few drinks together as a family, every year. This diabetes thing is new to her, so it's different this year. I don't mean, "left out", just that I wish she could participate as she did before.

Realistically, she shouldn't be drinking any alcohol. If she's going to drink it anyway, go for some straight booze (i.e. Vodka) with NO sugar. Also, Michelob Ultra (3g carbs) might be okay. Better off asking her doctor.

Alcoholic beverages, although being high sugar content, do actually lower glucose levels!! They cause the liver to work only on the alcohol content and forget about regulating the glucose content of the blood. So the liver forgets to dump glucose when it perceives the body is starving!

A word of caution!!! One drink for women and maybe 2 for men is the limit!!

Mom could have a glass of wine or a beer if she wants. Other drinks would depend on the amount of sugar in the mixer. She just has to experiment with what works for her!!

High blood levels of glucose can cause several problems, including frequent urination, excessive thirst, hunger, fatigue, weight loss, and blurry vision. However, because type 2 diabetes develops slowly, some people with high blood sugar experience no symptoms at all. How to treat diabetes naturally https://tr.im/Zwl1J

Symptoms of type 1 diabetes:

Increased thirst
Increased urination
Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
Fatigue
Nausea
Vomiting

Patients with type 1 diabetes usually develop symptoms over a short period of time, and the condition is often diagnosed in an emergency setting.

Symptoms of type 2 diabetes:

Increased thirst
Increased urination
Increased appetite
Fatigue
Blurred vision
Slow-healing infections
Impotence in men

If you think you have diabetes i think you should have a checkup and speak with your doctor just in case.

Moderate drinking is just fine for people with diabetes.
Alcohol LOWERS blood sugar levels. make sure to eat when you drink and check your sugars often. This lowering effect can last up to 24 hours.
If you have a hi carb mixer such as pina colada or regular soda, those carbs will raise your sugar.
Enjoy.

Diabetes: Do alcohol and tobacco use increase my risk?

Answer

Yes, alcohol and tobacco use increase the risk of type 2 diabetes.

While studies show that drinking moderate amounts of alcohol (one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men) may actually lower the risk of diabetes, the opposite is true for people who drink greater amounts of alcohol. Heavy alcohol use can cause chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis), which can impair its ability to secrete insulin and ultimately lead to diabetes.

coke zero and Bacardi white rum. no carbs no calories and no sugar. Switched to it when I was told I was diabetic. You can also drink rye or Bourbon and water. Or vodka and soda. small amounts of dry red wine as well. The trick is to watch the mix you use. And stay away from things that contain fruit juices, coconut and things like that. Also liqueurs such as Bailie's and flavoured brandies are not good. As long as she drinks in moderation no more then one or two a day even a beer is OK.

None. What is with all this attitude with drinking? Left out? It's not like you are taking a cruise and leaving her behind. No alcohol is good for a diabetic. She is still borderline? That is good. I wish I could go back to borderline and change a lot of things.
