Hi!

We use shredded paper for the following:

* Storing apples /Potatoes / Onions and other crops

* Starting the fire at the allotment

* If we are sure about the lack of ink toxicity, to line waterproof hedgehog runs / nesting boxes

* As a mulch / starter plant insulation

* Hanging basket thin over liner layer

* Packaging

* Making papier-mache for modeling

* Compressing into fire bricks

* Stuffing scarecrows / Guy Fawkes

* Protecting crockery & ornaments during removal

* Bran tub

* Once treated - between shed walls as insulation

* Sewn into a pillow-case as a temporary sick bird / animal bed

Good wishes.

Uses For Shredded Paper

While recycling processes are getting better, the reason it's not good to put out your shredded remnants with the recyclables is because it is almost always "mixed" paper, and for all intents it's impossible to sort. Various types of paper require various types of processing in order for it to be re-used. For instance, glossy magazine paper has dyes and clay in its composition that need to be removed or neutralized, as opposed to plain white office paper, or newspaper. The problem with shredded paper then, clearly, is you most likely do NOT separate the various types before you shred, and the recipients certainly can't sift through... so, they generally declare the entire package "contaminated" and throw it in the trash.

Depending on your local Council you can put it out for recycling in the UK.

Like the others said, animal bedding (even horses can use shredded paper), or you can try asking local businesses if they can put it in with their own recycling if your Council won't pick it up. That way it will still end up being re-used.

i find it really good for my rats bedding.
i found 2 albino rats and they looked skinny and like they were going to die so i took them home and within a few weeks there were 11 more rats to my suprise. I could nt really afford to keep them and didnt have the heart to take them down the shelter where they would of just put them down. so i went up my local doctors surgury where they had loads of the stuff. I seperated mum, dad, girls and boys and now i can afford to keep them all. It makes grest bedding and i just chuck some toilet roll in for comfort.I had three bin liners full at christmas and still have a bit left over. I think i best go and pay the doctors a visit.

You could also use it for the following:

packaging:
when moving house or doing a car boot sale fill a cardboard box with it then you can put glass and crockery in it and then things dont get smashed
soft toys:
get some fabric from old clothes or curtains and a needle n cotton and then you could make teddy bears. it doesnt cost a penny and you could sell them at a car boot or give them to charity
or if you have children you could sit with them and make paper-mache

have fun

It can be recycled, used for pet bedding, used in a compost although not to much of the glossy stuff.

Those are just a few of the things you can do with Shredded paper. Call your local animal shelters and schools I'm sure they would love to take it off your hands.

Ring your local RSPCA and see if they want it for animal bedding. It is ok to recycle in the UK.

I don't know on a large scale what it is used for but in our own home we stopped buying liner for the pet cages and started using the paper from the shredder. I also use it to insulate packages I mail.
