Hello everyone,

I recently became a vegetarian and I've been having trouble keeping my weight on. Now I'm already a fully grown 23 year old who weighs 50kg so I don't really want to lose anymore.

I've always been rubbish with food and knowing what is good for me and what has what in it. Could you give me some advice of which foods to eat which would supply me with the substances to keep me healthy and keep my iron levels up (I always border on anaemic! Oh and I'd prefer to stay away from supplements or tablet vitamins.

Cheers

Soy and low fat dairy-whole grains-legumes and beans. Dark green leafy veggies for iron-also fortified cereals. Plenty of fruits and vegetables for vitamins and minerals.

Dark green leafies have iron, as do chickpeas. Make sure you eat your non-heme (vegetarian) iron foods with vitamin C to help absorption.

Chocolate has lots of iron in it. It also has lots of calories! Cheese could also be a good option for putting on weight.

Green vegetables are very nutritious like spinach; you may also want to try beans, very high in protein and fiber.
