I was thinking the other day about what I want to do when I apply for college in about 2 years. What about if I wanted to open my own no-kill animal shelter, what would I major in? I was thinking veterinary medicine and business? Is that right, or what else? Any tips are helpful! :-D THANKS!

Sounds like an awesome idea. I am an fellow animal lover myself (http://www.ExoticAnimalLover.com and http://www.TerrierLover.com are my websites)...

I am in the works of starting my own animal refuge down south.

I started at Texas A&M in Veterinary medicine, then moved to Pre-Med.

It depends on if you're going to have mostly domestic animals or exotic animals as well.

If you're going to have exotics, studies in zoology would be absolutely helpful. If you're up for a degree in Vet med, more power to you, as you'll be the primary caregiver for these animals, especially in Emergency situations. You may even be able to take some courses at a community college for vet med assistant...This will give you good background.

Business is essential in anything you do, but you may be able to get by with a marketing or business minor.

I hope this helps...Blessings to you, and let me know how it goes!

Those sound good but I would recommend talking to someone who runs one for more ideas. You may need to take some political science classes to learn about how to work around legislation barriers and maybe even a grant writing course and a preliminary legal course - there are often lots of obstacles and costs involved so you need to be ready for anything. A No-kill shelter also needs a placement plan so when you write your business plan don't forget placement of healthy animals with caring homes. Good Luck!

I honestly don't know. Maybe you can call your local pet shelter and talk to the owner there to find out what they majored in...I'm sure it would help. I'm not sure you need to be a vet to open a shelter. Maybe animal behavior or zoo bio and business?

Those would be ok. Or pretty much anything else, for the time high schooler stress over what they are going to major in. 3 years after you gradutate college you realize you and about 90% of your friends have a job not even remotely related to your college major.
