I would like to try a healthier diet. Not for weight issues, but just for a healthier life style. I would like to stay away from meat products, caffeine, breads and pastas. So I know vegetables will be my number one food. Any other food items that you can list would be helpfull. What types of veggies do you perfer and what other kinds of food should I try or try to stay away from? Thank you.

Eat closer to the source-the more processed food is the less healthful. Don't give up bread and pasta, switch to whole grain varieties. Even better, eat cooked whole grains like barley, brown rice and quinoa in place of bread or pasta. Fresh or lightly cooked fruits and veggies are very healthy. Be sure to eat legumes, nuts, seeds, soy and lowfat dairy to get enough protein.

Don't give up all breads and pasta, just switch to whole grains. You can get quinoa pasta which is really tasty and very good for you. Quinoa in it's regular form is very healthy too.

All-natural peanut butter is a great snack too; lots of protein and healthy fats, plus it tastes like a treat and will keep you from feeling deprived.

And eat as many different fruits and vegetables as you can.

Any diet has its drawbacks - in the search to be a more healthy nation we keep cutting carbs. Yes, they are calorie heavy.True again, they are usually the demise of many weight scales - but then, it's the choices you make that determine how healthy something is.

Prime example: better to eat 1 cup of carrots raw with ranch dip or a slice of whole wheat bread with cucumber and cream cheese (non fat)? The starch wins. Cream cheese (source of dairy) cucumber (antioxidants and minerals) and whole wheat (if the whole grain variety) provides natural healthy energy as well as iron, folic acid, calcium, and depending on the brand, a whole slew of other nutrients.

Best bet:think color. pretend your plate is a canvas, and paint it with as many colors (naturally) as possible per sitting. Green, red, yellow veggies all have something in each that make them important.
Fruit: same, but in moderation. eating 5 a day is great, but keep the choices smart : oranges, raisins, v-8, cantaloupe, grapes and bananas have more per serving than most other fruits in the healthy rewards table.
Cheeses - the key is to read the back, and stick to the serving size. keep a ruler handy - 1 oz is usually 2 squares , 1" each of cheese.
Make your goal easy - no meat? beans, peas, nuts, and meatless substitutes are easy to find. Think color, and measure! Any food is okay in moderation, and can be healthy for you...just keep the portions as the package says, and keep the pyramid and your intake amount per day in mind.

I am 31, walk 4-8 miles a day with my 2 kids - I am not a health fanatic, but I do want to be able to keep up with them :) My intake is what my needs are - my body needs 1400 calories a day. I think colorful, balanced, and keep that number in mind. Look online for a calorie needs chart and find yours. Sticking to that # makes you healthier already!
hope it helps..

Variety is always good, so you may want to consider eating pasta and bread occasionally.

Nuts are good, and so are beans. Also, don't forget about fruits.

your diet should include some meat. If it is going to be completely without meat please try to refrain from calling it "healthier" as some people are easily lead and they may follow your example. So please, for the kids on here, don't refer to your meat free diet as healthier. Thanks
