Athletes who suffer a heart attack are simply due to genetics. They may train everyday, have the best conditioned hearts, have a efficient beating heart rate, but if there is a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol, they too will be subjected to those conditions. One of the first cases that brought light to heart disease in athletes is that of Jim Fixx. A marathon runner who ate well, ran everyday, but chose to ignore the symptoms of a heart attack and died.

ANATOMY/PHYSIOLOGY of a Heart Attack:
Also known as a Myocardial Infaction, in short, is the lack of adequate oxygenation to the cardiac tissue. The heart tissue is not supplied with oxygen from the blood in the chambers of the heart, but from blood vessels that line the outside the heart called Coronary Arteries. These are the vessels that supply the heart tissue with oxygen rich blood. These vessels become occluded with plaque and fatty deposits due to foods high in cholesterol and fat such as fast foods, pork, red meat and dairy products. Every body is different in that there is a fair share of the population that can process these types of foods and never suffer a heart attack. Then there are those who have a thin build, work out, and have elevated cholesterol levels and potentially suffer from heart disease all due to genetics. Anyway, once these vessels become occluded, the heart tissue suffers from the lack of oxygen and starts to die off. That's where the pain comes from. Other symptoms include a slowed heart rate, nausea, cold sweats, light headedness just to name a few. i hope this helps. Feel free to email me if you have any other questions.

A heart attack is basically cause by a lack of blood circulating through the heart muscle, not the chambers, but the actual heart tissue. This is usually caused by blockage in the hearts supply system, but can also come from arrhythmia. The heart beats because it gets an electrical impulse that makes it contract. If that impulse is faulty, or there is not enough electrolytes present to conduct the impulse, the heart won't beat. With athletes, I think the biggest problem is replacing the electrolytes they lose by sweating.

The most common symptom of a heart attack, heart attack victims may experience a diversity of symptoms that include:

pain, fullness, and/or squeezing sensation of the chest;
jaw pain, toothache, headache;
shortness of breath;
nausea, vomiting, and/or general epigastric (upper middle abdomen) discomfort;
sweating;
heartburn and/or indigestion;
arm pain (more commonly the left arm, but may be either arm);
upper back pain;
general malaise (vague feeling of illness); and
no symptoms (approximately one quarter of all heart attacks are silent, without chest pain or new symptoms and silent heart attacks are especially common among patients with diabetes mellitus).
